Today I decided to jump on the bandwagon....bought my youngest boy my teenage dream vehicle.

Gonna have a full body and interior restoration done. Has a new 350 crate motor in it with 1200 miles on it. Transmission seems good but it’s at the shop getting a checkup as I type.

Nice! My first truck was a 76 k-5. It was indestructible.

Suspension lowered and smaller tires would be a good move for a young driver. Speaking from experience.

Tires are gone, but I’m on the fence about lowering suspension. If it’s simple I’ll lower it a few inches if not I’ll keep it the same height. It’s a brand new 8” super lift still has the plastic wrapping on the leaf springs

What size tires? From my experience with those Dana 44 axles, they aren’t happy with anything aggressive above 35’s.

Prolly gonna put 37x12.50x17’s on it.

It’s got a 3 speed turbo 350 in it so it’s mainly just a cruise around town buggy, for him to go to school he won’t hit 40 mph

My first was a ‘79 that my dad rebuilt. Had a 400 small block in It. 37” swampers. Wish I still had It.

2-3” should be sufficient. 8” and its top heavy. Leaf springs have to be changed to lower it.

40mph around a sharp curve on a county road and it’ll probably be on its top.

This ^^^ go back to a 2" lift with 33's and he'll still have a bad a$$ truck, but it'll be much safer for him.

That's a good one. Oh, you were thinking the 40 mph was the minimum speed not the max.

Nice rig. I should have bought up every good shaped K5 I ran across about 15 years ago. Take the top off ASAP and store it in the garage, it is unnecessary.

Invest in some good high back seats and seat belts because he will probably end up needing them. If the lift was done right I'd say leave it. If all they did was slap some springs and shocks on it might want to drop it back down to max 4" and 33's - that seems to be about as high as you can go without having to fiddle with stock driveline, gear ratio and steering.

Big lifts and big tires can create big problems and will usually amplify small ones.

I agree with Rusty on this… I’ve been upside down in two different large tire, lifted Chevy’s. They look great, but not stable, particularly for a young driver.

2” Tuff Country EZ Ride springs up front + 1” Easy inch from DIY4X will let you also shift the axle forward 1” and get the tires off the back of the fender. 4” Tuff country EZ Ride Springs in the rear will level it, maybe a bit [censored] high in the rear. You should be good for 33’s all around, do some Bushwacker cutouts and you’ll be good for 35’s.

Here’s mine with 4” in front, 6” in back, cutouts and 35’s. It also has a full roll cage. Fronts rubbed when at a full lock, I’m just now completing a 3/4 ton axle swap. Lastly, for 38’s you really need 4:56 gears, 35’s 4;11 and 3:73 for 33’s. (I tried an experiment with the original roof to make a targa, it was a fail, so I bought this one, which will be going up in storage once I get the soft top installed)

The 38’s are gone. I’ll prolly drive it around town for a year before he gets his license....I’m not totally opposed to lowering it but I want to run 35’s on it. We will see.

Agree on the soft top and it will be getting one.

If anyone else has any useful ideas or suggestions please let me know. This is my first resto build

If your gonna have a soft top, a full roll cage is a necessity.

Come on man, you are supposed to be living vicariously thru him! Does that sound like anything you would have done if you had that ride? It will find its way into a mud hole ASAP.
