So on my lease there seems to be quite a large population of javelina. Last weekend while sitting in the blind to just see what's roaming around I saw at lease 50 in one group. No not wild pigs Incase there is any confusion. I've never hunted them before since my previous leases have never had any on the property. I noticed that TPWD lists them as a game animal with a year round season, but a possession/bag limit of only 2 per year. My question is why? Seems that no one really likes the animal to be around, and I've watched them on several times chase off the deer. Is there anything I can do, legally, to thin them out?

Bring lots of friends to your place and have them each get a limit.

Whether or not people like them probably doesn’t factor into TPWD decision. They are a species that has a limited distribution within the state, has historically been on the decline and reproduces typically once per year (sometimes twice) with only one or two young. They are much more dependent on range conditions and you can see populations sway because of this.

I’m sure certain local populations are different, but as a whole those guidelines make since IMO.

As mentioned above you may just have to put a pen up. My county has no season for them and I have one living on my place. The deer were scared of it at first but now seem to have gotten use to it.

I hate javelinas but not the same reasons. They made them a part of the Texas Slam a few years ago and that is horrible IMO. To elevate a stinking worthless javelina to the same level as a Whitetail, Mule Deer and Pronghorn is ridiculous. I probably wont revisit this thread cause it gets my blood pumping and I dont need to do that.

The javelina is a native resource.

I understand that and I do have an appreciation for them even though I say I hate them. I understand more than most, why they promote/protect them but I just dont feel they are worthy as a big game animal to be put on the same pedestal as WT, MD and Pronghorn.

All creatures great and small. I don't particularly like squirrels.

I know this is going to sound harsher than I probably intend it to, but from your earlier post someone is letting you hunt their land in exchange for you doing chores and your already making management decisions about what animals should be on the place? And people wonder why they don’t get permission more often…

Personally I like the little Javi's. As some said invite some friends out but be reminded that like any other game animal the meat must be consumed.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

If a person don't want to eat them then don't shoot them. Shoot one, leave it, and I find out, they'll be visiting a game warden. No different than shooting a whitetail and leaving it!

They taste like what you season them with in my opinion. They make cool euro mounts too.

Yes because I now have a written agreement with the actual land owner and his power of attorney stating I have free range of the place as long as certain conditions are met and maintained. It's a 5 year agreement that also states I am the sole hunter. the land owner cannot hunt and/or allow anyone else to hunt. And it's not like it's a free lease to mow the grass
Already I have spent close to $3k on the place just for upkeep. $1500 for a dozer to come out and clean the pond area, $800 on cutting senderos, another $500 on bringing in caliche for roads. That's not even including bringing in feeders, blinds, and feed.

Everything I have done is all written down, and the plans I have are in the agreement.

Or armadillos. I’m sure I’m missing something, but I just don’t get it. bang
Hunt them, eat them, promote them, protect them, have one as a pet—I don’t care, but just don’t make them one of the required Texas Slam big game animals.
