Big weather front is forecasted for TX this Wednesday (22 Sep)...

Temps around San Antonio will drop from near 100 to 85 degrees...(yes, I know it will still be warm...but just not so hot).

So what changes will occur with the hunting outlook with the big front...?!?

How far in advance do the birds move? There were tons of dove in North Ft Worth Saturday night. I could of had a limit in 10 minutes.

I'm fully convinced that I don't know. Period...

I've hunted before, during, and after frontal passage and couldn't conclude squat. Here's an interesting thread I started on the subject a couple years ago. Stompy boiled it down as well as I have ever read about this subject whether that was a professional writer or a poster on the THF (or elsewhere).

Soooo...in a nutshell, there is no way to reliably predict what will happen?

It would seem that some of the obvious bird options available are:

1/ use the Cold Front to migrate southwards...
2/ stay put and not move at all...
3/ stay put and fresh migrators pile on (best scenario ever)...
4/ local birds leave and migrators pass on by for points farther south (worst scenario ever)...
5/ move before the Cold Front arrives...
6/ move during the Cold Front...
7/ move after the Cold Front passes through...

So, the only thing we can do...is hunt when we have the time and take our chances with the vagaries of mother nature...be them good or bad...

A most memorable hunt for me: arrived at the dove field just before a strong cold front arrived...and experienced the still hot humid air turn to wind driven rain during the edge of the front...and then the rapid temperature drop with cold north winds after the leading edge was past...and finally, the deluge of hungry dove dropping in from multiple directions to greedily fill their crops after having ridden Mother Nature's roller coaster for many hours...it was a magical time...!

I've had that happen duck hunting many times, but only once dove hunting a couple years ago. It was early October and hot and dry. Nothing flying in the afternoon when they typically would. About an hour and a half before sunset the front came in dry, just some weird looking clouds. My dog was wet from keeping cool in a pond. When the winds shifted she started steaming. Within 15 minutes the temps dropped almost 20 degrees and right after that here came the birds. All coming from the north, they were cutting and circling down from way up in big groups to the mojos. Felt like a dry field mallard hunt. Was a heck of a thing to see.
