Except for the pulsars, are there thermals that work better for bolt guns?

I’m exploring options - always … Photos below are the BEFORE condition - the iRay USA scope (Bravo) come standard with a small footprint ADM mount geared at MSRs. The InfIray RL42 comes with an OEM mount similar to the pulsar mount we’ve all been accustomed to using over the last few years. Note: choosing a mount for the scope paints the user into a corner , meaning say I have both bolt actions and MSRs - well choosing a scope mount will put you in a predicament depending if you choose the one suited for bolt action or MSR. However what I’m testing this go around is configuring the rifles differently to accept an MSR mount - which usually provides better mating and return to zero that the bolt action mounts and more mounting location options. Here is my Ruger American Predator (comes stock with a picatinny top rail : with the Bravo and ADM mount So with the above setup I was able to get zeroed and repeat zero return when taking the mount off and on multiple times, so it works and works well BUT ISSUES: 1) the bolt handle clears the scope mount but also contacts it. It doesn’t seem to bind but as you aggressively rack the bolt to clear the spent and chamber a new - that CLACK is direct contact bolt handle (steel) to mount (aluminum) with the associated vibration through the unit. 2) the length of pull and eye relief is not right, with the bravo literally at the last rail slot I have to crane my head and neck forward and this takes me out of a firm shoulder pocket hold of the rifle . I need that scope to come back more but physically it can’t 3) the full length of the scope mount doesn’t purchase with the rifle rail, hard hits to weapon or optic COULD be more apt to effect zero , users should always strive for equal and firm pressure along the scope and rail mounts as the manufacturers intended.

The solution I am trying : going with AMAZON and going low price first - this is a 25 dollar part that is designed as a riser and extender picatinny to picatinny. Be careful NOT to order a dovetail to picatinny conversion mount - they look the same on many of the ads. I specifically looked for a riser extender that gives me enough extension but not to much (this will be mounted in reverse so you don’t want the extension too far back) also I wanted screws as opposed to knobs or nuts for securement. The next level up on these in quality is yankee hill or egw or Larue (60 - 120 dollars) Here are the AFTER photos: I haven’t rezeroed and fielded the gun yet but at first glance: 1) the bolt handle completely clears the riser/extender 2) the scope is now 2-3 inches further back with allows me to lock my shoulder into the stock and not have to crane my neck and head forward. The riser was a modest 5/8” lift so while my cheek bone is lightly touching the stock I feel more comfortable with the rifle purchase and believe I’ll make more consistent accurate shots with less scope bite instances 3) the scope and rifle rail are fully mated and solid More to follow as I get out and hunt with it

Looks like that is the ticket. I probably would mind the extra height

Only the Thermions and Infiray/iRay Bolt really work "perfectly" on bolt actions. The Pulsar Trail 2's and the iRay Ricos both ship with non-QD extended mounts that work pretty well with bolt actions. As PP has shown with some creativity and extended rails you can make a lot of scopes work that generally don't provide the best eye relief on fixed stock rifles otherwise. The AGM Rattler's have an American Defense mount that extends a little further back towards the buttstock than most others but it's still not perfect for longer stocks.

Halo LR works pretty good on a bolt gun, only complaint I have is I wish Bobro would put the QD levers on the left side. They can get in the way of ejecting shells, but with a little trial/error I’ve got mine positioned to where it works fine.

My Hogster-R in factory mount worked famously on a 700 with an extended bolt knob. I just had to find a stock with a LOP under 12” and an adjustable cheek piece. Ended up with a JTAC chassis, telescoping rifle stock. For me that was more preferred vs trying to do something goofy with the mount.

No issues with Halo X-35. Ran it on both Remington and Tikka Actions.

Here’s a Pulsar Trail 2 with a ZroDelta quick release mount on a Savage short action. In the picture, the farthest rear positioning bar is hanging off the back of the optics rail. The ZroDelta still has 2 other positioning bars on the rail. I could’ve moved it forward to include the 3rd, but this was more comfortable with it mounted in a tripod and me standing, which is how I mainly use the thermal. Bolt clears just fine with the thermal in any position.
