We had this guy show up and I could use some help with identification. I’m thinking red stag or sika? So far only shows up at night. Central TX ranch. Thx!

Its a stag. They are free range where we are and are awesome to hunt. They just started their pre-rut and things should be crazy in another few weeks. That guy looks like the WT equivalent of a 4.5yr old, so he might be ~6 years old. You can tell he has some size to him, but doesn't have the sheer gut or cow face of a old stag. Great trophy if you want to take him, not sure if you have seen any hinds that might keep him around. We typically see our stags in daylight between Oct 6th-Oct 20th.

Thanks guys, appreciate the info. Are they typically good eating? Where do they rank against whitetail, axis, nilgai, etc?

They are a close cousin to elk. I would rate the meat up there close to axis. Would absolutely be going in my freezer if I got a shot.

I think the back straps and tenderloins and better than whitetail, a bit milder and just a lot bigger. Haven’t tried any other exotics. The hindquarters are tougher than a white tails so you gotta be more careful with them if they aren’t going to grind

I’ve never shot a old stag. I do know a spike gets you 135 pounds of delicious venison. They are off limits on our lease now. Dang it.

Like others have said red Stag and good eating. They are close enough related to elk they will inter breed and produce offspring.
