Closing on some land next week that has been pretty much abandoned for the past couple years. I have already been told by a couple people in the area that trespassers have been hunting the land for a couple of years now. I plan on meeting and talking with the neighbors but there are no houses within at least a 1/2 mile and I live 45 minutes away. I will be putting up a gate, posting no trespassing signs and all of the normal stuff but I’m worried about having cameras and tree stands stolen.

I am going to set out an old broken camera or two with one higher up in a tree to try to catch pictures of anyone taking them. Any other good tricks or tips? Should I chain and lock all my tree stands or is will they just come back with bolt cutters and take them regardless? Thought about just putting up a couple cheap ones for the first year or two until I can make sure the problem is under control.

I had a lease in Oklahoma with a buddy - we put up a chain and signs. Didn't last more than a month before someone got out the bolt cutters and stole the sign. Depends who is trespassing and in what area. I'd wager than that in some parts of east Texas and up through Oklahoma - you will run into issues. Seems like a different culture in certain areas where some people think land should be available to hunt on by anyone.

I'd bet if you have enough signs and activity... that will at least help discourage any trespassing. I have a buddy who put up some fake cameras on trees and ran a wire down from the cameras into the ground to make it look like the cameras were really powered. That worked well for him as it gave the impression that someone was very serious about security. Those fake cameras are only $10 on Amazon so if one disappears - it won't hurt the bank too much. They even have red flashing lights to simulate real cameras.

JMHO- as long as there's not somebody there full time, there's going
to be trespassing and poaching. I don't know why, but a neighbor can
have as much or more property , and they'll still cross the fence and
roam around or hunt or whatever on someone else's property.
The grass is greener and all that I guess

I can guarantee that everyone on the road knows when you get
there and when you leave. And you always get the " well old man
so-and-so always let us do whatever we wanted to when he
owned this . . ."

Don't know what the attraction is

Making friends with the locals is a good move!!! As they are aware of the fact that there is trespassing they can let you know when folks are there. most locals are good folks and if they like you will help you, I was called by a couple ranchers when my gate chain was cut and gate opened.

Too late to do anything but they were concerned enough to call. S Bags stole my trailer but nothing since then. I now Have heat treated heavy chains.

This and try to get local game Warden to keep an eye on the place. B.O.L.

Contact the GW and county sheriff. Give them your name and number to call. Explain the situation and point out no one has permission to be there but you…….

I’d almost purposely ruin my hunting this season and be doing “improvements” all fall and winter. If it’s east Texas good luck. They are all over the place.

I now live in east Tennessee which isn’t too different from east Texas. I figured tactics and experiences would be similar throughout the country though.

Other than signs, gates, fences, chains and locks, don't forget purple paint. I haven't seen anyone, to this date, paint over purple posts and tree paint. Yep, get to know your local GW, and tell him/her your concerns.

I couldn't find anything about purple paint in Oklahoma and it sure seems like a cluster f of laws and regs:

They tend to get the message when you pull up to the front of their truck with a D7 dozer and raise the blade over their hood.....

simple ----- get a tactacam --- it sends you pics to your phone when it detects movement ------ if you are only 35 minutes away,, you just drive over there and the guy will still be there. Here is a pic of someone coming in the door of my lake house. It notified me in less than 1 minute.

Was that person supposed to be there? Looks like she was planning to stay for awhile

We had a trespassing issue on one of the ranches we acquired.

It was obvious the place had been poached for awhile and a few weeks into it I heard hog dogs running on the ranch. I had a pretty good hunch who it was so I made a phone call to a friend of mine saying that if we caught anyone out there it was not gonna be pretty.

About 15 min later I get a phone call from the perp, he gave me the old “ well we’ve been hunting here for years “ spiel.

I just girls him that the ranch was under new ownership and that if we caught anyone on the property it would be extremely unfortunate for them.

Never had another issue after that.

Yes, unfortunately the reputation is well deserved.

I don't know that ALL of East Texas is like that, but Deep East Texas pretty much is.

I moved here about 35 years ago....and nothing has changed. It's a whole 'nother world behind the Pine Curtain.

Old Traditions...lawful or not (mostly not) die hard. It's not an aspect of living here that I relish.

We hunted a 100 acre tract north east of Huntsville back in high school. Way off down a dirt road....typical east Texas place, mostly pine trees, no fences, only access was the power line ROW

We would always find shell casings in our blinds to calibers we didn’t own

On our place years ago had Buckner Creek running about 2000 feet along the property line at back in Fayette county and about 3/8 mile from ranch house. . Caught or found 2 Folks, after hearing shotgun, One about 80 and the other His mentaly challenged son hunting squirrels out of the massive oak trees along creek. They had Crossed creek and fence at back through another property. He said He had been hunting there for years with approval of other owners. He apologized profusely for tresspassing and Son was in tears. Sat and talked to them a bit and both seemed like nice folks and actully made Friends with these Boys .Told them to come through front ranch gate and down to house if they wanted to hunt. They did several times over the years and they stopped and didn't hear from them for awhile. Called number and His Wife, that always sent cakes and cookies everytime they came over said the Old Fella had passed away. Nicest Man I'd ever met. Always asking if He could do anything on place and did let Him run my dozer a time or two to clear fence lines. Wouldn't take a dime for doing it. Just drink a cold beer and sit a spell on the front porch. Old Willie was a good un.
