I should have slept in today .. the morning was worse than yesterday afternoon. Ended up with 1 bird, didn’t see many groups moving at all. Not a good sign for the rest of the weekend out here but I’m going to give it a go again tonight and tomorrow morning.

Seeing tons of dove in neighborhoods and subdivisions. None out in the fields north of Austin. Almost makes me think that the big freeze either movee them to warmer areas around houses, or those are the ones that made it and never left the area. Just a crazy thought

I think these local birds; morning or white wing, got slaughtered by the cold, who knows if many will make it from the north. Maybe, maybe not.

Headed out this evening with my son, if none other than enjoy the outdoors with him. I went a couple of nights ago and shot 11, but they didn't fly worth a dang. I was lucky to scratch that out because I couldn't hit the broad side of the barn
Spend time with the ones you love. Time is not guaranteed.

For the very first time in all my lifetime I finally went out on the opener of dove season. Private lease in Crane County. Huge acreage and have hunted it before with KWRS in past yrs and it was on fire. Yesterday? Only thing on fire was me as it was high 90s close to 100. Hunted a tank we had scouted and seen a few birds last week. Yesterday? It was scarce. I took 6 and couldn't find 2. All mourning dove no white wings. In yrs past hunting with Kent the white wings were so thick it was just shooting into a cloud of em and hitting a few. I keep reading the severe freeze this past yr killed many off? I don't know. Huge mistake I made and I know better. Take my chair and take water, lots of water. I was hurting pretty bad yesterday evening. Brush was stupid grown more so with goat head stickers. I was smart enough to wear my snake chaps to keep em off. I am not giving up. Trying back Saturday and Sunday morning. Hope yalls dove season goes well One of the problems out this way is too much water. All of the ponds on the big ranch are full and they have weeds and grass all the way to the water line. If a dove doesn't have a clear place to land, they won't.

I'm east of Angelo we have places in Coke, TOm Green, Concho and Runnels Counties. About 10n years ago we started to notice declines in the mourning dove population. Every year we would see less and less. Every place has tanks milo, and wheat fields. You could limit out everyday during the season. Now you don't have any birds until late September when fronts bring them in from the north. Now if you are within 10 miles of San Angelo you will have clouds of white wings and the hutting is excellent. TPWD sees no issues but I'm telling you there is a bad decline of mourning dove in this area. Only place I see Mourning Dove is well out of town, White wings and Eurasians are pushing them out. I feed behind the house and the neighbor behind me does also, we're covered up in White wings and Eurasians both. White wings and Eurasians love the city life, they hit the feeders, always water somewhere and the roost in the large tree's. Several years ago I hunted down by Saginaw, it was field about 4 miles out of town, just after daylight the train comes through blowing it's horn at all the crossings and scares the birds out of town. When you heard the horn it was time to get ready.

Dove and duck numbers are way down. I do not care what and usfw survey states. Farming has changed and it’s changed all migratory birds. For the worse. It ain’t the weather keeping dove away. We all sweat our rears off 20 years ago while counting our limits. This makes the most sense to me regarding the dove trends. Hunters are not the only ones to notice either. I went back to Ohio But my pretty countryside Had been paved down the middle By a government that had no pride

As a young man the fields were covered in milo as far as you could see, now it's all cotton. It's definitely noticeable with the Sand hill Cranes, duck's and dove. Might add there was always a good crop of quail hanging around the edges on the fence lines. While we've still got some places in CRP it provides little compared to what the milo fields offered.

Where I hunt nobody plants grain crops, and only coastal hay now is their cash crop. I guess it's easier to cut and bail two or three times, and lining the bails up in a row out in the open.
Thursday at 12:45 PM #33 Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

We’re starting to kill a few more birds in Midland County. It’s still all morning dove. The white wings are still absent from the party. Central/Northern Martin County is typically a very easy limit, but they aren’t killing hardly any birds

we usually hunt concan but our provider opted out this yr.brother hunts around Georgetown .he saw and downed 3 birds.stopped and talked with a biologist and was told that the freeze killed thousands of birds in Texas & Oklahoma and that the dove population took quite a hit.biologist said they are also seeing birds missing toes and parts of the beak due to the freeze. not sure what the forecast is for a couple years .

I believe this, but don't understand then why the state hasn't reduced limits and seasons to protect the dove and help them rebound. Or is that something we can expect for next year.

Why reduce the limits if very few people are shooting limits?

Think I'm going to go Wednesday one last time and if I still can't find birds concentrate on dove.

Hammered 'em in Edwards County on a caliche pit full of water opening weekend.
Hammered 'em for the Southern zone opener this week down south of Pearsall on water. But shoot on one body of water and they're gone to another one so had to keep moving.

The white wings made their way down yesterday. Couldn’t get a picture but we had 25 in the sprinklers in LaJunta. A good sign!
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!
