What’s the scoop, other than don’t touch dead animals you didn’t kill, have the meat tested, and don’t eat the forage?

It can be real hard on a deer herd. Sometimes it will kill everything except for the fawns.

It’s a little late in the year though...when did you hear about it?

Probably first heard it back in July. Wasn’t but only 1-2 cases so I wasn’t concerned, but it’s spreading and getting a lot closer to us

Don't want to scare you but I have seen it knock out 80 to 90 percent of our deer herd when we have had it. If you have feral hogs and you clean them wear Nitrile gloves. They eat the dead deer and can carry the anthrax spores in their mouth and throat from what we were told by a state biologist. The anthrax does not kill the feral hogs for some reason. I get depressed just thinking about getting it again on our place.

anthrax is the real deal - do not kill any hogs to eat - it can eliminate most every deer in the area it is in and it take some time for the deer population to return - if it is verified in your hunting area then forget deer hunting for awhile

Where I grew up, the ranchers would burn any cattle that died from anthrax. I assume that was to keep the buzzards from eating them. There were no feral hogs there back then, so that was no worry.

We are in Foard/Cottle and heard about this from a local vet. and he told us to burn any dead animal we found in the pastures.

Scary stuff

You do not want to pick up any dead skulls that are fresh from the last couple of months and move them off of the ranch. Kinda late in the year for Anthrax right now, but summertime was more in line with when it usually starts. Anthrax has been found in a lot of counties and many you don't think of as having any. It can be spread in many ways. You can get it also. Google Anthrax in Texas and you will get links to answer any questions you have about it.
