Has anyone looked at the new releases from Buck for 2021? Seems they switched from Buck heat treated 420HC steel to 7CR steel. At least for some of the new 2021 models. Wondering if anyone knows why? Covid related material issues or the almighty dollar? I have always liked Bucks 420HC on my EDC knives. I can’t say the same for 7CR blades

Ive had mine as my primary hunting knife for maybe 50 years and have no idea what kind of steel.

A quick google search turned up a few articles. An interesting one...

https://gearjunkie.com/knives/common-knife-blade-steels

From the Article "Don’t bother with anything less than 8Cr in this series. Steels 7Cr and below aren’t worth your time or money. They lack the carbon necessary to hold an edge, even during mild use."

Buck has the reputation of getting the very most out of comparatively low end steels, 420HC being a prime example. I'll bet they know considerably more about steel than some gear junkie, so I'd give them the benefit of the doubt and try one of their knives in the new steel for yourself. Either that, or bump yourself up to one of their higher end steels.

It's also worth pointing out that popularly priced knives sold through big box stores typically have different requirements than high end knives sold to enthusiasts. Most non-enthusiast consumers want something cheap, that looks good, and is easy to sharpen.

I couldn't tell you one steel from the other. What I can tell you is that every buck knife I've owned, I've not dropped more than $50-$60 on and they've never failed to effectively field dress a deer or hog. I've sharpened them with everything from a cheap whetstone to a Work Sharp. If I made a living with knives, I guess I'd worry about it more.

I know nothing about steels either, but I have had many Buck knives over the years and never found one to talk bad about. I took a tour through their factory in Idaho a couple years ago, and it was quite impressive. Their heat treating section was very impressive and a large area. I have known people that returned their knives for service....and they were very well taken care of. I purchased one of their very large hunting knives and the handle was just too big for me. I sent it back and asked them to reduce the girth of the handle and they did it without any problem.
Have faith in them....they are a good company that will take care of you and furnish a good product.

This is true. I broke the tip off of a BUCK knife separating the ball joint of a deer. Sent it back to BUCK, and they installed a new blade and sent it back to me no questions asked.

I come from a lineage of Buck knife holders. My father in law gifted me a 110 for Christmas a few years back and has never left my side. Also haven't had to sharpen it yet and I'm a bit rough on it. Only issue I had was the belt sheath clasp snapping probably 3-4 months in. I replaced it with a leather one from Buc-Ee's with a velcro close and it's held up ever since (4-5 years now). I like the leather velcro one as well for the reason being if I get too close to a wall/fender/etc, it won't scratch!

This is all I’ve used since the 70s. I guess it’s a 110?

My uncle bought a Buck fixed blade in the 70s. Other than being really hard to sharpen, it was a great knife. Once you got it sharp, look out! He nearly took his thumb off cleaning a turkey. Brownwood ER put 12 stitches in his hand that night.

My dad won a special 110 with a leaping buck on the side of it. He didn't use it much, but he always talked about never winning anything at any raffle. After he died, I'm 99% sure I left it up on top of the purlin of the family camping shelter, right below the horse stables at Big Bend Nat'l Park. With 4 kids running around, I didn't want to leave it down on the picnic table. 'Must have been 25 years ago now. It's not the only knife I've lost, but it always stands out in my memory.

I mainly use cheap knives that I can sharpen with a cheapy accusharp and not worry about it. My current favorite is a $10.00 Old Timer, hunter blaze orange handle, fixed blade. 'Think I got it with Cabela's points. 'Course, I sorta stabbed myself with it yesterday. Always at the tail-end of cleaning an axis in the summer heat. At least no stitches needed...this time. I even have bought a chain mail glove for my left hand. It was in the tool crib, 10' away. bang A processor friend of mine told me once (after I DID need stitches) they call that "Hurry up and die!"
