It’s been 15 years or so since I shot a coyote.

And come to think of it, the handful I’ve shot were always during deer season.

So this morning while sipping coffee, this one stepped out in my pasture.

When I picked it up it caught me off guard it’s coat.

Is this just a summer coat or does it look different to yall?

I don’t see coyotes except when it’s cold so I don’t know what their summer coats look like but my first reaction would be could it be mange? Ive seen one coyote with mange while spring Turkey hunting and it was pretty obvious. Looked like a chupacabra. Because mange is highly contagious to dogs and humans and transmitted by mites I wouldn’t touch one. If I had dogs I would probably burn the carcass but that’s about it. No reason to keep it this time of year anyway. I can’t tell by the picture but that coat looks a lot more normal (just thin) than the coat on the mangy coyote I saw.

It looks just like a coyote I shot last week. I don’t see anything that would lead me to believe it has mange.

When I blew up the picture, I saw nothing either. Just saying if you don have to handle one his time of year, I wouldn’t. When I saw the one with severe mange, there was no mistaking it. At first, I even wondered what it was.

I don't see any evidence of mange, just summer coat.
Adios,
Gary

I shot a much uglier coyote on New Years day of this year, in Texas the coat doesn’t account for much in terms of quality for summer vs winter, they’re just all ugly
