My neighbor escorts trucks that carry large items. He told me today that his company is going to escort trucks carrying windmills to the king ranch. He also said that it is going to take approx. 6 month. So I guess the ranch is going to have a large windmill farm. Does anyone have any theories on how windmills impact hunting?

There are studies going on related to waterfowl and wind turbines, noise, flying into them, the commottion, etc. I haven't seen anything on deer studies though. They are pretty dang noisy if you have never been around one.

The deer get used to them in no time, it's during the construction phase that spooks them.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Ive seen video clips with cow happily grazing under them. But cows are cows. I also saw on tv that there are studies being done on people who live around them that they cause headaches, dizziness etc..... just thought I would ask

Has anyone seen the ones they put up at Sinton/odem off of 77? In the Corpus Christi area. I think they suppose to be putting up 120 of them up and last I heard they had 90 up!!

I've been all over the properties that have them off hwy 351 outside Abilene, didn't seem to bother the deer one bit. I have actually seen them grazing around them, so I guess not.

The Kennedy ranch was taking the King ranch to court a few years ago about this. Guess they lost. My neighbor flew down there to produce a news story on it as well. The Kennedy ranch just doesn't want to look at them I think.

We quoted several wind projects on the kennedy ranch. They didnt work out, probably a reason they dont want them on the king.

the bigger concern will be from the people who put in the windfarm... i dont know any personally, but the few folks i know who hunt in those areas that have the windmills, say the installers of the windfarm made the landowners eliminate hunting with a rifle in the vicinity of any of the units. they did not want them getting damaged from gunfire... i dont think they really should be concerned by that, but at over a million dollars per windmill, i cant say i would not want to protect my investment

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

I hunt in West Texas in Motley County and there are 8 of them about 4 miles away and with the right wind they sound like a highway. Deer could care less on that ranch I've seen deer less than 1/4 mile from them.

We install plenty of farms. Usually, hunting only has to cease during construction. Once they are up, the hunting resumes. I have seen deerstands within 500 yards of them. I am sure certain owners of the mills have different agreements, but the landowners put these up for the money, wouldnt be very smart to eliminate one source of money to gain another...

Yeah, but the land owner will more than likely make more off the wind turbans than he will off of the hunters.

I know for a fact that some of these guys are getting 10,000 a year PER wind turban on 10 year contracts.

Actually I had it backwards. It was the King Ranch that said they will never have any windmills... hmmm...

I strongly disagree with the first part of this statement. Those things sound like a jet taking off...it's a continuous droning. I think deer will get used to them but I'd just as soon not have them near me.

I'm just talking about the sheer annoyance of listening to the thing from a human perspective. Deer couldn't care less, they get used to it...

Those particular windmills are annoying to listen to 0.75 miles away. You can hear the blades swishing the air, and that constant fan noise coming from them. I am good freinds with people that live in that area and have property there and the deer are not back yet. They say the turkeys dont care though. Those deer in peoples back yards couldnt be run off with a bucket of cr*p and a mop, look at PK lake. I own property that is in the borders of a proposed project, and could get two towers if it works out. So far alot of the land owners like myself have told them to pack sand.
