How well do you know your rifle? I have a few and know them pretty well. I have standardized all zeros to 25 yards. I went a step further and ordered custom turrets for my 30.06 and .270. From 25 to 300 I don't need to hold out of the fur with any of my rifles on deer sized game.. Most of my shots are within 35 yards but every once in a while I'll make a long shot on an animal. I make sure it looks real good on paper first. If I can't hit 3 shots in a 12oz beer can off sand bags at 200 yards I don't use that rifle. Some rifles are too light for me and some don't have the balance I like. I don't consider myself an expert but I will say this is learned from experience and having the chance to use multiple makes and calibers. Overkill and under gunned is all based on confidence or lack of in the equipment being used. P.S. breathing and heart rate are definitely going to factor in if Mr. Big comes in and it won't be the same as shooting paper. If you don't get that rush, then you're not getting the full effect. In all honesty I have an after the shot adrenaline rush that takes a while to come down from. If I lose that, I'm out of the game.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Let me see if I can attract a few responses to your post by posting one of my own.
I can't say I've ever seen anyone zero a deer rifle to just 25 yards. However, a quick check of the ballistics table for one of the more common deer rounds (6.5 Creedmoor) shows a trajectory that's not as awkward as I expected. The bullet reaches the maximum height of its arch (5.1 inches high) at roughly 160 yards and crosses the scope's axis again at roughly 300 yards.

It was common practice for my family back in the 70's and 80's to zero all of our rifles at 25 yards. We all shot either 6mm or .270 back then. We did a little reloading and some hunted in NM and Colorado during that time frame. Both calibers were good to 300 yards with a 25 yard zero. IIRC 6mm was back to zero at 250 and the .270 was back to zero at 265 yards. 105 grain on the 6mm and 130 on the .270.

How well do you know your rifle? You do realize you have people in your audience who might take no more than five shots a year with their rifle.

Sorry but I couldn't resist. With the OP not having drawn a response in almost a day, my intention was to arouse further interest in the discussion.

When I was in the Army we zero at 25 meters / 27 yards should be zero at 300 .

How about other variables that could be effected by a close range sight in. For example scope height? Or for a variable scope, different scope power ranges?

Just point and click.

I've had no issues setting the scope to 5x and sighting at 25 yards. I can zoom in or out without changing zero. BDC is a different story and that's where custom turrets come in handy.

for years, we always used 25 yards for new rifles, new scopes, etc. to get them "zeroed" ... then take a few shots down range to verify, 100, 150, 200, 300, ... to fine tune and verify. I used to know off hand all the factory ammo ballistics for various calibers, but I don't shoot near as much as I did in my younger years to keep all that floating around in the gray matter.

i've tended to zero my rifles at 50yds thru the years simply because i don't shoot outside 100yds usually and i figure if i'm testing zero why shoot father than necessary. checking zero at too much distance puts too many other variables at play for me. usually ends up costing me more shots to feel confident.

Or, that the point of impact is actually at the 2nd Foci.... I know to each his own, and I know great hunters that only shoot a couple rounds a year... but I might want to take a longer shot and be successful, and I am not Lucas McCain.... so I'll practice a little.

Lucas did not take long shots. Y’all see the Lucas episode where he missed the shot at a leaping lion? He kinda freaked thinking he couldnt miss. Checked out the gun and his eyes and when they checked out his confidence was gone. The Rifleman could no longer shoot a rifle. Well, it ended well, imagine that. No turrets involved in the episode.
