You’d be better served getting good out to 500 yds. When I hunted in the Panhandle my closest shot opportunity was 350 yds.

I have only killed 3 but they have ranged from 150 to 509 yards, all in Montana.

My furthest pronghorn was 375 yards. The vast majority of the ones I have killed have been between 150 And 300 yards. Just know where your rifle hits at 400 and even 500 yards. Pronghorn live in wide open country and 300 yards may suddenly not seem that far.

689 yards for me, last October. My hunting partner killed his a 510 yards. Nothing between us and them but 6 inch tall grass. They defend themselves with their eyes, and their speed, same as a coyote. You ain't gonna close in, most likely.

I’m hoping to spend all summer getting good out to 300 In years past my buddy hunted with them probably 15 times for whitetail and aoudad, but never pronghorn. They run a great outfit though, so I wouldn't hesitate if you get the chance.

I think with a rifle I have killed 5. First was running right at me at about 75 yards. The other 4 were all 250 to 300 yards. 1 with MZ @ 150 and 1 with crossbow at 28 yards. The one thing they all had in common was in every case I had some sort of rest (bipod, tripod, fence post or round hay bale). At those distances, offhand would require more expertise than I possess.

Dang ok then, I guess I’ll practice out a bit farther. Thanks for the info fellas I’ve only had to take one shot over 300 out 20plus. And if I hadn’t of been trying to one up him I could of killed him earlier in the day at 75 yards before he got all skirtish. Don’t over think it. Plus when you hit the 400 mark wind becomes a major major factor, if your outfitter cant get you closer then 300 on private land. Fire him

Get you a decoy and decoy them into range if they are in the rut. It is a blast and they will come into a range you are comfortable with. I killed mine at 210 yards or so and he would have kept coming....I was worried he would get downwind if he kept coming at the angle he was. I think he came from around 500 yards in a semi-circle.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

I killed both of mine between 190 and 200, but I had shot opportunities from 190-as far as you can see. I passed on a B&C buck at 390 because he was moving. Be prepared to shoot as far as you comfortably can, that will only up your odds. Make sure you have a good rangefinder-the open country/lack of trees/hidden rolls will quickly lead you to miss-estimating range. I thought I was pretty decent at guessing ranges but out there what I thought was 175-200 was 268, 350-400 was actually 526, and it got worse from there. If you haven't already picked a rifle, I would suggest something overbore as it will give you more margin for error. They aren't tough animals but if I was building a PH rifle I'd look at 6.5 PRC, 26 Nosler, 6.5-284, 7RMag or something along those lines.

Sent in deposits today to hunt with Sagebrush Hunts next year. My dad and son will get tags and I’ll be along for the ride.

I was driving through New Mexico, near Cimarron. There are hundreds right next to the road.

I knew a guy who probably killed more pronghorn than most anybody on here and he did it with a 22. I grew up in New Mexico and a friend of dad's was a rancher. Huge place tens of thousands of acres, they had their own helicopters and crap. This guy's son was a couple grades ahead of me but I always hung out with him when Dad and I went to visit. We would usually wind up riding around on dirt bikes and three wheelers with our 22's. My friend would ride around and smoke pronghorns while moving at a good clip on his dirt bike or three wheeler. He said his dad hated them so he shot all he could. I only visited this guy a few times a year and he was always shooting pronghorn. I assume he did it all the time.
My friend died the night of his high school graduation. He went with a bunch of friends to a party by the lake. He was drunk and tried to jump off a cliff in to the lake and didn't make it to the water. I think his dad has passed as well - helicopter crash.

I was excited to hear about another person with such a similar dislike for pronghorns as myself, but that ending was pretty damn depressing.

TTT Ranch - I can't think of a better hunt than tagging along with your dad and son (unless it would be dad and two or three sons). My dad has passed and my son is now an incorrigible fly fisherman but those hunts are the ones I will always remember.

Never hunted Borden county, but I did work there for two and a half years.
Plenty of good pronghorn in the area. They’re dumber than a bag of hammers in that part of the world.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.
