I suppose the oil extractors have their purpose, but I have never considered using one. On our last 3 cars I have been able to reach the drain plug from the front and not have to jack it up or put on ramps.

While I dont like the extractors, im sure that even if some oil is left in the system that if you kept up with maintenance in a timely manner it would still be fine. I see a lot of vehicles that are not maintained well at all and still run relatively well. Im reminded of one of my buddies in college. He ran his cars oil change over to like 15000 miles, this was 15 years ago and not using any type of synthetic oil etc., he had the oil changed on the following service at 2500 miles to make up for it lol . roflmao

I use the oil extractor for changing the oil in a boat. When an engine is in a boat, the only way to get to the drain plug is to pull the engine. Not gonna happen. In a car or truck, I can get to the drain plug, so that is the best way. The oil extractor isn't the best way to change the oil, it is for when getting to the drain plug is a huge PIA.

Would this work for differentials? I need to replace the gear lube, but don’t want to crack the seal that isn’t leaking and there isn’t a drain plug.

Yes and it actually a valid method on diffs unlike on engines. If you've ever seen what's in the bottom of the pan on a modern car that is VERY WELL maintained you would not consider trying this in the least.

Pass the gravy.

I trick that I use for the sedans in the household is drive up on 2x4s (front wheels). That's just enough clearance to get to the drain bolt and slide the drain pan in place.
