Checking trail cams earlier, and it got me to thinking, how many of you shoot bucks that aren’t regulars on your places? We all pretty much have target bucks way before season gets here, but do you typically see more bucks/does during the fall and winter than you do now?

Yesterday. grin Now whether they will be there first of archery season is a different ball game. The amount of mature bucks that are dominant on a place dictate what happens when the velvet comes off and the pre-rut starts. Here are some pics from the last week also. They are visible now...what happens in a month or so is going tell me what I need to know for future reference.

Some of the regulars stick around, some of them disappear and are replaced by new bucks that show up only to disappear at the end of the rut and and our regulars that left came back. In general when the daytime temps drop we get a lot more daytime activity.

Generally speaking where we hunt, we'll see a lot of the target bucks just by being out there and doing early sits to watch them. Some will show up on camera while others will just work around. You'll see a regular group of a few bucks and then there's always a handful that you never see on camera and may only see once or twice all season.

First two weeks of the General Season when rut is winding down and during the middle of the week thereafter with fewer sightings as the season passes and deer respond to prolonged hunter pressure.

As a general rule, roughly 90% of the harvest during any given season will happen during the first two weeks when deer are still figuring out that so many are after them.

Yup
Exactly

Always a deer or two that sticks around all summer long only to disappear until the next summer it seems....& visa versa. lol

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

The last 3 or so big deer we've killed on our place had only either been seen once, or not at all prior to being shot. We always get a few shooter bucks on camera, but aren't ever seen when we're in the blind.

After the neighbor wounds them with an arrow, calls the guy with his dog, and posts it on their "Prostaff" Facebook page. realmad

I quit deer hunting in 1977 but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying them. I feed protein and corn 24/7/365 in feeders all over the ranch. Some of the nicest and biggest bucks I have seen on the ranch I have seen and still do, from the cab on a D8 while walking it back a couple of miles to a pasture where I have been working for the last year. They don't fear that machine. Often times they stand just past the track while I walk it on by. I have had a couple even follow me for a bit probably thinking they would get a treat!! To me, that's enjoyable. To the few friends I let hunt on the ranch, it's heaven.

I usually see my shooter bucks about 30 seconds before I pull the trigger.

See all my best bucks (in a normal year) the last week of October. A few during the rut in November and then a good amount of them again during Muzzle Season (January).

Typically see (daylight cam pics) throughout the season if they are 7+. 5 years old and some 6 year olds we typically see pre rut and post rut. Won’t see them during the rut unless we get lucky with the doe they are following.

Usually, the week after season closes. It is like they know the season is over, even if I am hunting hogs out of the same stand, they show up just to tease and tempt me.

MLD ranches are awesome because you can start on October 1st - deer are still in their summer patterns and are usually still in bachelor groups - they are not spooked up from a lot of gun shots - most of the top end deer we took over the years were in October

We are MLD but have agreed no shooter bucks until general gun season starts. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Only shooter Buck I have seen this year so far has been on the Hunting Channel or on here. Nothing at my place. Although the next few years look really good if the neighbors and poachers don’t tag out first.

Im not saying I agree or disagree(never hunted MLD), but whats the reasoning, Hud. I assume to give them a fighting chance, or maybe to have a better take on their age. Can yall hunt archery during that time?
