Most places in Texas I’ve hunted you can usually figure Labor Day as a good ballpark. It can vary by area and individual deer.

When testerone levels to the point where the antlers begin to harden and yes, this is true.

I have hunted or worked on or owned land in most areas of Texas except North, NE, and East Texas and have found a few deer to start to shed the velvet as early as August 21. It seems like most were middle-aged bucks that shed velvet early. I had one that had shed his velvet in front of my house on Aug 25 in eastern La Salle County one year. Had a few in Goliad County every year around August 25. If a buck sheds his velvet early then there is a great chance he will shed it early all the time and within the same 3 day period every year. I have also seen or found shed antlers from healthy bucks the within the same 3 day period every year, after they drop or seen this on trail cams. Here is one buck I have on TC for 2 yrs in a row that has shed, the dates are 2 days apart. He may have shed on the same calendar day, just this is date when I got his pics.

Majority of ours (Deep East Texas) will have a hardened antler (velvet shed) by the 1st week in Sept.

Checked cameras Aug 28 and only one had shed. Most are close and some im sure will be a couple weeks into Sept. Interesting my big buck last year was the very last buck to shed out of many many many we had on cam. I forget when it was but well into Sept. When I killed him on Oct 5 he still had some velvet on a couple tips but Im not certain it would of come off any time soon(its still on there at the taxi.) I dont have time to dig for pics, but this year Ive got pics of a buck with a normal point in velvet. Then I get a pic where the point is completely bent in half. Now he has broken it off at the bend and you can see the layer of velvet and then the point inside. Interesting. Im sure guys like STx have seen that stuff many times over. Wonder what it will look like next year. Sept 11 in full velvet and then Sept 20 with a little left and about like when I killed him Oct 5.
