Hello, my son is looking to go on his first dove hunt this year 13yo. I was looking at a few public lands, but if they were a decent pay to hunt field close I’d rather that route. We are in Ellis county. Looking for 1-2hr from here. Anyone have any leads?

Look under Guides & Outfitter section may be some help there.
If you want birds and action it will be a paid hunt unless you know someone with land.
95% of Texas is privately owned.

Here's an idea, you need to checkout Texas Youth Hunting Program "TYHP". It's an outstanding origination my boys went on deer, pheasant & duck hunts for FREE!
There are lots of opportunities for kids at TYHP.
Good luck.

TP&W says you have to pay a $150 hunt fee now. That’s what I read anyway.

Yes you do have to pay $150. That pays for the hunt, guides, food, and a place to stay for a weekend. Well worth the money.

That’s like waving a magic wand over $150 and turning it into at least $500

The TYHP hunts I took my boys on were like this.
Arrive Friday late afternoon/evening.
Get settled in
Sight in rifles/Check shooters ability
Have dinner "eat like kings"
Evening instructions for morning hunt.
Next morning hunt
Lunch
Evening hunt
Dinner
Sunday morning hunt
Pack up out by midday Sunday.
Well worth $150.00.
