While trapping the 5+ coons wearing out a feeder, I ran into a problem with fire ants. I'm in a creek bottom and the ground is covered with them.. With the traditional DP traps the bait was getting covered with fire ants. Nothing was touching those traps.. So I changed to soup can traps and loosely hung them just off the ground so the ants can't easily get to them, but can easily pulled down by a coon.. Two Coons down, three to go. [Linked Image]

I should have also added that IMO everybody in Texas
that has deer feeders should be trapping coons, maybe
2 traps per feeder at least.
All we're doing now is raising new generations of well
fed coons and crows

It's a different type of dog proof trap.

Good work.

I got 4 off of one feeder last weekend in Duke traps. Game cam shows two more to go.

Use corn, ants are attracted to wet foods. I use cat food after a freeze.

I had gang set this feeder. I did use corn in some of the dukes, but the soup cans with dry dog food got the coons first. The dukes went untouched except for one set with dog food in shallow water in the creek near the stand. All coons on camera have been taken out plus one. And two bonus possums in a conibear bucket set with empty cheeto bag for bait. Mission accomplished for now.

This is pretty much gospel! Coons are way out of balance and even if you don't like corn buzzards(turkey) coons are reaking havoc on turkey populations. I took out over 2 dozen last season. Time to start putting a hurt on them again.

When I start seeing gangs on cams at feeders, I will trap hard for several weeks to thin down. Not possible to get them all, but earlier this year we thinned about 20 from the area around one feeder. And yes, it is getting to be time to do start back up.
