Accidentally turned one of our many cams on video. I was amazed at what I found out. Im old school and I was aware it was available but completey outa sight outa mind. I guess I assumed it took video almost constantly and it would take forever to review while burning through batteries and taking up memory space. Well, I assume those ARE the downsides but maybe its not as bad as I assumed and maybe its worth it. -UPSIDE=tremendous increase in angles to be able to age and score. Able to age from body language and interaction with other bucks. One 10 sec video is as good as a whole lot of still pics. If you happen to just get one chance at a buck of interest then the video will tell you way more than the pic or two that you may of gotten with still. Just plain fun to look at the videos. -DOWNSIDE=Goes through more batteries(how much???) Takes up more memory space(how much???). Takes FOREVER to go through all the footage. We have over 50 cameras between both leases, so the time factor or any other downside is multiplied. PLEASE TELL ME ANYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT CAMS ON VIDEO. My thought process is at square one. What other upsides or downsides have I missed.

I've never used the video clip feature on any of mine but I can see your point to the value of them when trying to assess and judge a deer.
I would assume it definitely would use a lot more storage space and battery as well.
Maybe one of the guys on here could provide some good accurate numbers on those things.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I use video a lot - get all angles, see how they move, see how they react to other bucks, etc. Very helpful in aging IMO

Have never run mine on anything but video for the last 10 years.
You learn SO much more by using video. Just set it for short times 10-15 seconds and use a 16-32 GB card.
You get to see from which direction the game comes from and departs, many different angles...if judging bucks, are they alert or relaxed, etc...etc...
A single picture rarely tells you any of this. With video its like being there to observe the animal (and ALL it does) for at least a short period of time. All the things you would enjoy seeing if you were hidden nearby, you can capture on video. A still picture is 1/10th of second in time, you won't learn much from that. 15 seconds opens a whole world of understanding.
I keep folders on my computer with select videos of deer I recognize from year to year. It has been invaluable and is a lot of fun just to watch.
Video is also a big advantage (for me) when keeping track of Feral Hogs on my property. They are very dynamic animals and a single pic of a hog (or group) is nearly worthless to me except to show the numbers and that they were there.

Takes way to long to watch all the videos. I run 10 camera's and only have one on video because of that reason. I can find out all I need to about a buck/doe by simply looking at all the photos we have of them.

I have too many different brands of cameras, and a very limited attention span reading the manuals, to even attempt to use video mode. Thankfully, I don't have to go before a politburo, with video, to get permission to shoot something. I can certainly understand it's ability to help judge the age of a given buck. Someday, I'll probably upgrade and get the same brand, better cameras at all my sets. Then maybe I'll dip my toe in the water.

I have help with the teaching but wish I had to learn just one kind.

For the first time this year I ran a little video with one cam in a pen and then stills with the other cam in the same pen. I had a lot of wasted videos due to slow trigger or false triggers. I shot 10 second length and then 1 minute delay. I ended up going to 5 minute delay and then after about a month went back to all stills. Easier view and store. I have a good friend who runs a ton of cams on the ranch he manages and he runs 3 shot bursts with short delay. He has done this about 8 yrs now. He tried videos but ended up using his cams in the burst mode. Burst mode allows him to see different angles and with the short delay he gets different views also.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Besides everything already mentioned, there are SD memory cards that are WiFi enabled, but; -your camera(s) needs to be compatible -wifi range is limited -eats up batteries, so you definitely want rechargeable/solar setup too.
Of course, you'd need to have wifi setup, so there's that too. Different mfgr's have different capabilities. You also might want a laptop or NAS setup on the network to off-load pics/videos in realtime, or you could just pull them from the camera (wirelessly) and clear the memory when nearby, either without having to touch the camera.
Sandisk Eye-Fi & ez Sh@re & Toshiba FlashAir are a few that come to mind.
