Last night, Pig_Popper and I visited several properties and dropped hogs on three of them. On the 2nd place, we got 5 hogs and he shot the largest sow (140 lbs) and while checking each of the hogs, he discovered his big sow was a mulefoot - HIS FIRST. I have shot several mulefoots off this property in the past, but it has been a couple of years since the last one. She was dropped with a 6.5 Grendel firing Federal Speer TNT 90 gr. ammo and sighted with a Bering Optics Super Yoter-R thermal.

Being a mulefoot is a genetic anomaly. It occurs as a natural, rare mutation, but for quite a while in the late 1800s and early 1900s, these were bred as a highly prized meet hog here in the US. It is not often you find them as ferals, but I suspect many are missed because hunters usually don't look closely at the hooves.

DNS , thanks for posting these pics and for the hunt!

Personally I’ve checked maybe 200 hogs over the course of the last few years across many counties in Texas .

I’m sure every hunter has there own side list of hunting achievements that they keep tabs on, this for me was one of those “I’d like to see this and experience this for myself” moments.

It’s right on up there on my list with:

Taking a hog with grandpa’s Winchester

Taking a hog with 4”+ cutters

Taking a 400 lb hog

Etc…

I've yet to see one...in my 30+ years of hunting hogs, but still check each one. I've been aware of them for quite some time and in researching their domestic history, I curiously found that direct ancestors of mine (indeed having my exact name) used to raise them.

Interesting breed. Rare these days both domestic and feral. Though you have clearly found an area where the genetic condition exists.

To my knowledge, you (DNS) have taken FAR more Mulefooted hog than anyone else. up

I’ve never taken the time to look at a hogs foot. Shoot them, drag them off, repeat.

You don't look at the foot when you grab it to drag it off? No extra time involved.

Popping pigs since early 80's and have only had one mule foot sow 7 or 8 years ago.
Dislocated or injured legs from snares, fighting or previous injury from hunting is much more common.

No I cut between the knee and ligament put a wire drag through it and drag it off. I guess I don’t understand the purpose to look to see if they are mulefooted. If it’s a big hog or great cutters ill snap a pic that’s about it.

Knew a guy that was all about mule footed hogs. He liked them enough to release them on his land.

I shot several mule foot hogs near Dayton. I thought it was odd at the time.
