When I was a youngster my dad, brother and I would go junking, curb shopping or dumpster diving. My dad never passed a pile of stuff/junk someone put out on the curb. We would grab anything he thought he could use, sell or scrap. Turns out, people threw some dang good stuff away. Growing up that way, I learned a valuable lesson about one man’s junk being another man’s treasure. To this day, I will stop and pick up stuff that I can use at home, my deer lease or if I think someone else can use. As a matter of fact, my neighbor was throwing out a nearly new Igloo 25 quart marine ice chest today. I asked him if anything was wrong with it and he said no that he barely used it. I brought it home, cleaned it a bit and it literally looks new. I can’t even begin to tell you how much stuff I’ve picked up over the course of my life.

I’m the only one on here that grew up doing this or still does it to this day? Heck my three grown daughters will pick up stuff on the curb now. My wife isn’t always onboard with me doing this.

I’ve constantly outfitted our deer lease with curb items. Patio furniture, old decking, pallets have all been re-purposed.

Yeah. Did a lot of it when we lived in Hawaii. Vacuum cleaner, rice cooker, toaster, fishing poles, spearfishing gear. All kinds of stuff

Started doing this to help furnish my first apartment at 18. Still do it if something catches my eye. Picked up a real nice patio chair a couple of weeks ago and filled up my truck bed with firewood recently.

It's not hoarding if you put it to use.

Go to the dumpsters outside the on-campus apartments at TCU the day after the last day of classes. You will be amazed. up

My Dad did this his entire life. I’m afraid I have this gene as well.

My current grill was at the curb a few weeks ago down the street. I haven’t used it but it looks like burgers were made once or twice. Absolutely 0 rust.

When younger I was not to proud to bring home some one else's junk. Somewhere along the way I switched gears and am OK with being a minimalist.

You’re not alone. I’ll find some hunk of scrap metal at work and get excited about it. I toss it in the pickup and it eventually winds up in my shop. Most of it never gets used, but I hang on to it. You never know.

The only times I've been dumpster diving was for work. Be careful what you throw out and how it's thrown out.

Every Sunday evening people cruise my neighborhood looking for stuff that is on the curb.

I used to pick up cigarette butts and smoke them, but that was years ago.

Picked up a nice 30 gal Ingersoll Rand air compressor that someone threw out. Took the shroud off and it was just a broken belt. People are lazy, and I love it. A coworker picked up a bunch of stainless steel pipe that another GC in town was throwing away and had listed on Craigslist. He made over $800 at the scrap yard for a few hours work.

I've been known, to do a little picking myself.
I found this medicine cabinet, in a dumpster, at a lake.
It was Lime Green, when I refinished it, back to natural. And I had to glue a lot of it
back together. It was in pieces. a bunch of sanding, Put new shelves in it.
Put some stain, and tongue oil on it. New mirror. (which I already had) got lucky/
Painted the inside. Gave it to my daughter. She was thrilled. I think.
