Derek, I applied a weed killer & fertilizer to my yard back in April or May. When would be a good time to re-apply the same killer & Fertilizer for the fall? What would be your suggestion as to a pre-emergent, and when to apply it. Please give me several choices, live in a small rural town with very little choices of places to purchase. Do have a HOME DEPOT bout 15 miles up the road. Thanks Daniel

I don't like weed and feed products. I prefer to tackle each on it's own. Do pre emerget now. If you have a Lowes within driving distance, they are carrying a product from Lesco called Stonewall which is prodiamine. And it's the best price I've seen on prodiamine. Get it out within the next week and watered in. Look at the label rate for yearly max per 1000. It should be 6-7lbs. Divide that by half and do it now and early February. I'm not sure what products HD has. Go there an look and see what they have. Just look at the active ingredient list on the bag. If you see one that is a 0-0-7 and the active ingredient is Prodiamine or Dithiopyr go with that. If you go with Dithiopyr divide the yearly max rate by 4 and apply every three months.

Henbit being a winter weed it's very easy to control post emergent. Any 3 way herbicide will handle it. Lots of hose end options. I like to mix my own and Speedzone is my go to.

Being out in Pittsburgh you should have a feed store that stocks Lone Star Feed fertilizers. They private label some good ferts. Without seeing a soil test you could get out an application of their 15-5-10 now and then early/mid October go straight ammonium sulfate 21-0-0. Or a ammonium sulfate/urea mix. Or straight urea. The regular Scotts turf builder 32-0-4 is also a good option for fall.

Before you kill it, consider benefitting from eating some of it. I usually pick some of the nice, dark green tops and sauté them like I would leaf spinach. Salt, pepper, garlic, olive oil.

It has the nickname Henbit because chickens love it. It’s a member of the mint family (square shaped stems).

Purslane is another good one. Nice, mild flavor like lettuce and LOADED with omega 3. Some people grow it big, then cut and pickle the stems.
