Our Bear population is thriving, and causing problems for some farmers. They damage crops costing farmers money. Some times a lot of money. So it is legal to shoot any Bear one sees on their property. This year has been especially bad for Bears on my brothers farm and neighboring farms. This is just one of the many Bears to pay for it's meal. Sneaking up on the culprit. Moment of impact. If you look close you can see the blue haze from the gun smoke in front of him. We think the plumb above the bears is dust flying off it's hide. I posted these same photos on a Canadian site. These photos were taken in Northern Alberta three days ago.

Do y'all eat them? Keep the hides, etc? We don't but some folks do. Keep in mind, this is damage control, not hunting in the traditional sense. As such we are not required by law to use any part of the Bear. And there are no licenses required, no seasons and no limits.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Cools pictures! Besides damage to crops, do the bears have a negative impact on the deer, elk, moose population by eating their offsprings?

I don't know about Elk and Deer but I know of a study done in Saskatchewan a few years back that showed that Black Bears kill close to 50% of the Moose calves born each year.

I don't see the need to crawl any closer than first sighting. Bears are fast enough to overtake that snail crawl. Yum kalamari.
One shot is all it should take.

I want a one shot kill and for that I have to get close. Within 100 yards at most. My brother, the one in the photo is in the same boat as me. We are both getting on in years and our ability to hold steady has diminished considerably from what it was even ten years ago. We both would rather take our chances on hands and knees to get close enough to be confident of a good hit then to risk having to track a wounded Bear into dense brush.

LOL I suppose it would sound pretty good to someone who has no local Bear population to hunt. If you are curious; a Bear tag would cost you $105.50 plus you'd need a Wildlife Certificate which costs $28.22 and a WIN number which costs $12.00, I think. That one I'm not sure of because it is two separate fees and there would be some tax added. The tag would allow you two Bears and be valid for two seasons. A fall season which runs from Sept 1 to November 30 and a spring season that runs from April 1 to June 15 You can legally hunt both seasons if you wish if you have at least one unfilled tag. In addition you would need to hire an outfitter or find a hunter host. A hunter host is really just any adult resident that is willing to act as your guide. They are not allowed to charge for their services. And they have to buy a $30.00 hunter host license for themselves. There would also be export requirements to meet and some cost for that I believe. My closest neighbor is a outfitter who specializes in wolf and Bear hunts in this area. I think he charges around $6,000 for a five day hunt. There may be other fees. It's been a lot of years since I worked in that industry so I may not be up to date on fees and requirements. I think that covers it. BTW, I am no longer physically able to act as a hunter host. I had a heart attack last winter and I have lung issues so I can't walk much more then 100 yards without having to stop for a rest.
