18 weeks away. Anyone else signed up? If so, this can be our motivation thread for training.
It has been 10 years since I ran one and I’m old and slow now.

That’s awesome especially after 10 years.

I hate running. I once trained for a 5K just to prove to myself that I could do it. Haven’t run anything since. I can’t fathom running long enough to make my nipples bleed haha.

The plan I’m going to follow is actually 16 weeks long, so the next two weeks will just be fitness building a little bit going in to the start. Week 1 (starting august 23) has an 8 mile long run day.
Saturday I ran a slow 30 minutes, yesterday just walked 30 minutes, today I ran another slow 30 minutes.

I used to run 10k’s every weekend. Back in the early 80’s to early 90’s. Had a bunch of friends that ran, so there was motivation to train, so I wouldn’t run last. I was selective on the races, picking only those with good T shirts. That was a long time ago, before marathons were much of a thing. Runners these days appear to think that running is a new thing that they discovered.

When I got out of the Marines I said I’d never run again. I don’t remember why I started again.

And, what makes a T shirt a good T shirt, you might ask? To be good, it has to be at least 2 colors, with 3 colors being primo, and it had to be an SOB shirt (Stuff On Back).

If I could still run, I’d do it and still gripe about it. Take good care of your knees.

Lol. This is awesome.

I ran the Marine Corps marathon and the Cowtown years ago. Both good t-shirts!

Just finished my workout today. 12 minute warmup jog to the track, 2x400m on the track at race pace (which I’m slow so just shooting for 10 to 10:30), 12 minute cool down jog.
I’m still just working easy right now cuz there’s 2 weeks before the actual plan even starts.

Don’t know about cbump, but it used to bother me that I never ever broke 50 minutes in a 10k. I could run 6 miles in under 50 minutes, but that little extra distance did me in every time. I got close, and I tried hard, but didn’t get it done. Maybe some of you fleet footed fellows could do it. I never was speedy.

When I was running a lot years ago at 24 years old, my best half marathon was 1 hr 42 min. But I never broke a 4 hr marathon.
My first marathon I got 4 hr 20 minutes.
Second, I probably could have done It but I did the weekend challenge. Saturday I ran the cowtown 10k at 45 minutes. Then the next morning (marathon morning) I woke up sore and ran a 4hr 5 min.

I just want to do this one. Once I’m back in good running shape, maybe I’ll do another one and shoot for under 4 hrs.

Running in Dallas, great way to get robbed, shot, stabbed, ran over, killed. Think I’ll pass

How many of any of those have you worked where the runners are the victim in the 50 years of the Dallas Marathon which has about 12000 runners? My guess is zero.

Only thing that almost killed me running was during the Houston Downtown to Dome 10k, way back when. Must’ve been 100 degrees, and at the medical center there’s an underpass. Way down and way back up. Close to the finish, sort of, and a tough place for tired runners. There were lots of folks laid out under there, with EMT’s looking after them. I was running so slow going up the other side that you could’ve clocked me with a sundial.

But…hey…it was a solid red T Shirt, 2 or 3 color printing, and an SOB shirt. Maybe not worth dying for, but worth suffering for.

I guess if you use an app like mapmyrun you can do that. I always liked to map out my routes so I could stash water and not have to carry it

That’s a good point. It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything at that kind of distance. I used to do the same. Hadn’t thought about It this go round yet.

Thy make those belts now that have a few water bottles on them and during my really long runs my wife would ride a bike next to me with water but on the 8-12 milers I would stash .

The bicycle thing is a great idea. My wife is training for the Dallas half marathon so we are talking about doing long runs on different days (her Saturday me Sunday or vice versa) and each riding with the other. Serve as a cross training day.

Week -1 in the books: 16.25 miles with 4 mile long run.

So far this week I’m at 7.9 miles. That includes a 35 minute walk (rest day) Sunday, 30 minute easy monday, track workout at marathon pace Tuesday, and nothing today as I’m at k9 training. Today is a rest/crosstrain day anyway.
Tomorrow will be 30 minute easy. Saturday 6 miles!

Thanks for asking.
