There are several brands of about the same design. Any experience with ones that don't hold up or to stay away from? Any brand that is exceptional or that trappers prefer over the others for whatever reason?

I have the Bridgers and haven't had any problems with them.
JMHO- I don't like using squishy or sticky baits in them .
Since I'm trying to catch corn thieves, I use corn, sometimes
with dry cat food. Like any other trap, they also need to
be staked out as if an elephant or a cape buffalo was going
to try and rip it loose. Fasten it securely or kiss your $ 15.00
goodbye
Another JMHO- it's my belief that everybody that puts out
corn for deer should be actively trapping coons. I don't feel
generous with my expensive corn. Dead coons don't steal
your corn and tear up your expensive feeders

Good Luck

Look at the Z traps as well, I run about 4 dozen of them. They come in a few colors, recently I really like the White. If the brush grows up, still easy to find and have been durable. I also like a push/pull capable trigger, my early Dukes they had to pull the trigger. Typically buy mine by the dozen from RP outdoors or another trap supplier.

Push pull type does work better. I have z traps, Duke, and Bridger. Mine have held up well.

Save yourself some time and headaches. Spray them down with a good rust prohibitor. I have a product used by the oil industry that is also used on bridges, roller coasters and other steel applications that will keep them from rusting.

I've had good luck with Dukes. I have tried a lot of baits, but finally ended up with fish flavored dry cat food....they seem to love it.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have a couple very old Feather light and others that are probably Duke DP traps. Sounds like all the name brands are good in their own ways. And I do understand on the securing it well. I did lose one of my feather lights last time I used them though I suspect it was taken by a two legged poacher and a couple others were borrowed by a friend who I let keep them. Thus I needed to replace them. I was intrigued by the push pull trigger and going with white, but I could not decide, so I found and bought on ebay a variety pack of 4, 1 - Duke Powder Coated, 1 - White Z-Trap, 1 - Brown Z-Trap, and 1 - Bridger T3 which covers all y'alls suggestions for less than 13.50 each shipped. Two of those are push pull triggers. I was really wanting to buy some more soup can dp traps, but found they are no longer made. I have only one and have caught more coons with it than any other trap. With the price of corn so high this season and two leases with feeders, I am going to war. Both places I am counting 5 to 8 coons under my feeders at times.

I did not like the FB1 foot traps. They worked good in the store but after a a few coons and some dirt they were a pain to set.
And corn for bait works good. After all that is what they come to the feeder for.

The Cumberland trapping catalog I just got shows them listed on page 8

If your spot is away from houses and out in the sticks, just use
footholds. You don't need big expensive ones to hold a coon

We use doubled up tie wire (triple or more if thin wire) around the feeder leg and twisted up tight. We have never lost a trap and we are well over 400 coons caught. Probably more like 500 now.
But we did loose a few traps when a lazy ranch hand thought he would use a single strand and twist it up like a bread tie. But then he was an idiot.

Awesome. Thanks. I just ordered some. I used to get that catalog years ago, but I have not been actively trapping in so long I eventually stopped getting it.

I agree and not my first rodeo. I did a lot of trapping as a younger man and still own 50 to 75 steel traps. The DPs were unheard of when I was first trapping. These days I normally have a dog with me and I am lazier than I used to be. The DPs are so quick and easy I like to keep a half dozen to use at the lease. I was just amazed at all the brands and options this time around.

Well that's good that you're working on whittling
down the varmints
I only wish more people would
IMO anybody that has corn feeders should be
actively trapping coons. They just get fat from
gorging on all that free corn and protein feed.
Kinda like deer lease welfare cheats
Maybe more people will start with the price jump
corn has taken

I am forced to do that year 'round. I feed all the year long and raccoons will quickly become too numerous. I don't care if a few go to the feeders but when I have 8-10 coons at a time, its just too much.

I have pretty much whittled down the group on one feeder using Duke DP traps. Usually the coons try to climb the legs of the feeder. Never seen one 'burrow' before, but this one did.

That's one less that'll be eating game birds and eggs and chicks
and to worry about eating your corn and screwing up timers.
On to the next one

I buy a bag of fish flavored dry cat food and put it in an old milk bottle. It will last for years in your truck and the coons love it. I normally just fill half the trap and I'm in business. The first time I discovered dog free traps I was going crazy with all the coons. I set up the traps and finally took them out again after I had caught 89 coons. I have since used them when they start showing up again, but those traps sure do their job !!

It's really incredible how many there are.

My property has a spring fed branch running through part of it and its a natural highway for raccoons. As soon as I catch a group from a feeder, it is replaced by another.

There might be a lull in the action for a week or two....but no shortage of coons. I've asked myself more than once "where are they all coming from"?

I don't even bother trying to trap them out if there are less than 5-6. Heck I'd be doing that non-stop. Another thing I have noticed about Raccoons (over the years) is that they seem to be the first animal to find water and food sources on a property. They must travel and explore more than I have ever given any thought to.

I can't prove it....but I have a suspicion that Lone Boar Hogs will follow a coon trail when venturing onto new property. I have years and years worth of pictures/videos of where I have hand broadcast corn and the coons always find it first. Then often..a Lone Boar will show up. It happens too often to be sheer coincidence IMO. But I admit it is only anecdotal evidence for the thought.

Just started up my feeders last week. Went out there yesterday to check the game cameras and many pictures with 12 raccoons in them using my feeders as trapeze training. Getting the dog pruf's out and going back in the morning to set em out.
