I ran across a folder of old(first flash digital camera) trail cam pics from 2003. Thought you might enjoy seeing some unmanaged deer from this ranch. Today it looks totally different. It has hard to imagine that the top end of these bucks are the basis for what it is today. Body sizes were 165 to 200 field dressed on weight. Most of the culls were under 130 and 5+ on age the first year.

Some great bucks for back then stxrm!
What do you mean when you say 'unmanaged'?
Looks like you guys were feeding protein at least then.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Protein was being fed but numbers were not being kept in line. No management plan just shooting "trophy deer" and not many deer shot period. Ratio was not to bad but the number of old mature bucks scoring under 130 was very high and the upper end bucks numbers were very low. The lower end bucks were in the majority of each age class. Short beam(19"-22" on mature deer), no mass(under 30") and lot of 9pt or under mature deer. Only one year out the last 10 years were any does shot. Basically it had been top graded for the last 12-15 yrs. that year the best deer on the place would have scored in the 170's that first year, now that deer may be a management deer(depending on age). Water situation was horrible and what was there for surface water was brackish/salty most of the year. Hog numbers were off the charts(I caught/killed 145 the first month). Today it is a much different looking ranch from a deer standpoint and habitat that has been improved.

Great old pictures with some really fine bucks. I still have a few pictures that were taken by the old flash/film cameras. I still like the quality of the old ones better.

I have a box full of the old 35mm photos also that I found after my move. I may have to scan some to add in this thread later on. I bought my first flash 35mm trail cam in 1992 and have been using trail cams every since. I even owned one of the first video "trail cams" back in the mid 90's. I also owned 3 different VHS style cameras that I would build boxes to hide the cameras at feeders. Then set a camera with 2hr battery with 2.5 hr tape and record till dark everyday in August and Sept. I started with video cameras before trail cams...I think in 1991. I may even have some of the old tapes that I put about 10-20 seconds of each buck on for that year and then had a 4-5 yr history of some bucks.

I'm more concerned with the lack of small mammals at the feed sites.. Not even a bunny.

Great stuff stxrm

So, in a nutshell this just shows what a good, solid management plan will do for a deer herd.

I'd be interested in knowing what your body weights did from that time to now on the mature bucks? My guess would be a 15%-20% increase in body weight.

Wonder why they went from color to black and white trail cam flashes.... doesn't seem to have an effect on deer? or since more people use them for security/surveillance now...

Well Bozo dunce just for you...neither one of those bucks made it to Thanksgiving. All those photos were from the first year and before the season started. 1/3 of the bucks in those pics were also gone by Thanksgiving. 39 spikes the first year from a total of 75 bucks were removed from the herd. 31 bucks 5+ yrs of age were shot and 29 of them scored under 128 gross. 2 in those pics were over 7 yrs of age and score 152 and 171 were shot. Every year after and till today they have shot spikes and the culling class has increased. The culling bar has been raised to a level that most ranches would consider them trophies...but on this ranch they are the lower end of each age class.

Bozo, reread my posts in this thread very slowly. When the lights come on inside the hollow cavity inside your brain where reading comprehension is then you will understand what it is like to have egg on your face. Wipe it off, you are looking foolish.
