In everyone’s experience, how long does it take for deer to get comfortable eating alfalfa? It will be in the pen with all the feeders and such. Thanks!

A regular (small) bale lasts about 36 hours on my place, after having not put any out for months. Yeah.

This is good, fresh stuff, not some trash that's been sitting.

I take a bale and split it in 3rds for 3 pens. usually gone in about 4 days. Like Creek says, got to be pretty fresh stuff.

It really depends on your area and what shape the habitat is in. Alfalfa can be work great for deer or be a waste of money. If they take to it right away it is due to poor range conditions and/or someone around you has been feeding it. Don't put a lot out at one time when you start...just a pad or two at each feeder location. By the highest quality you can find with a lot of leaves and small stems/stalks. There is a lot of waste alfalfa and if you factor in the waste.... protein pellets can be cheaper in the long run.

I've only tried to feed it in Deep South Texas and it was a waste. They didn't eat it. My grandfather used to feed it in the hill country and had luck. But I suspect range conditions had a lot to do with it there. Those deer were lean and hungry.

we started feeding it to draw the axis and ultimately the whitetails started eating it as well (Bronte). I've tried it on other leases (Coleman) with no luck...also tried the chaffhaye in Coleman...the cows would destroy pens to get to it so we stopped feeding it. We always spread a bale in and around our feed pens

Never even give it a look.
