I’m not bad at it. I’m not afraid of physically challenging work. I’m good at sticking to it when I can motivate myself enough (like preparing for a backpacking trip in the mountains).

As soon as the trip is over, I’m done until next spring when I realize I gained 10 lbs over the holidays and need to get back in shape for the next hiking season…

Anyone else put themselves through this same cycle? bang

Yep, loath it. I've actually done really well with my new iFit Bike. I actually enjoy it, riding in a bunch of different locations all over the world.

you need to find a cycle that you like.

I am not in love with working out, but I enjoy being in shape and all the benefits that go with it.

Try and make it into the gym 3-4 times a week and keep a good variety going

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

It’s a beat down, lived in and out of gym 3/4 of my life. I hate the gym. I only work out now for fall hunts out west. I’ve adapted my work outs though. More HIT 20-30min Sandbag work outs, mixed in with weight pack hikes and riding bike. Unfortunately my western hunts run through Jan

I hate going to the gym. And for me there must be an end goal.

Sign up and pay for a marathon - oh crap I gotta train.
Used to do triathlons, so once I signed up I knew I had to train.
Same with cycling and trail running.

There has to be a motivating factor and for me that’s an upcoming race of some sort.

This is really good advice. I decided to pick up ice hockey about 2.5 years ago, and it’s honestly been a life saver because it’s an enjoyable way for me to “workout” without feeling like a workout. I’ve been playing pretty steadily since I started, any while the scale hasn’t budged more than 10lbs, the physical benefits have been amazing.

I will gladly beat myself into exhaustion on the ice at 10:00pm on a Sunday night as long as it’s fun lol.

I love working out. The health benefits and the visual benefits are amazing, and all the motivation I need. I will say, I'm not in love with leg day. I usually do legs on Saturdays, and when I can, I do legs in the mountains by backpacking with 50-60lb pack weights. Usually carrying extra gear that I don't need, specifically to train for hunting season. I agree that goals (like hunting trips, races, etc) are wonderful motivators. Everyone has their own system, and I think as long as you achieve the goals/results you seek, it doesn't really matter how you get it done. I also stick to the "consistency is key" concept and do my best to stay consistent year round, mainly because I love the progress and don't want to lose it. I'm definitely not obsessed with aesthetics, but seeing massive changes that make me happier and feel better has helped me a lot over the years. When I saw no change as a young skinny guy, it was a lot harder to stay motivated.

HEY !!!

I can tell you from personal experience. I've carried a lot of extra weight most of my life. It's taking its toll. Just on the horizon 2 knee replacements and lower back injections for spinal stenosis. Constant pain. I don't feel like doing anything. My brain says YES, my body says NO !!

So, do something. I've never been a fan of the Millennial stationary bikes where you follow some hot-azz chic around the world. Probably cuz I cant wear Mantights. But whatever you WILL DO.

Stay active, easier said than done.

I am 68 and been running for 42 years - have had the same running buddy for the last 38 of those years. For me running is easiest and fastest way to stay in shape - the key has been the running partner though since it keeps you accountable - on the mornings I do not feel like running I know he will be there so I get up and go - on top of that we talk then entire hour that we run so it goes by fast

This. Enjoy it and compete with yourself.

I started weight lifting in 1994 and loved it. I had found something that was all on me whether it was success or failure. It’s the epitome of hard work paying off.

I quit for a few years when I was 37/38. My mental and physical health declined. 4 years later I started back and haven’t quit since. I feel 100 times better now.

All I do is ride a bicycle 4-5 days a week (3-4 miles on trails) and watch what I eat. Pretty easy actually.

I the walk about 3.5 miles per day, usually leave around 5:30 to 6:00 depending on sunrise. I will do this April thru December. I will usually hit gym in the winter months of January February and March.

I really enjoy my workouts and like walking much better due to the fact I can step outside my house and get walking

Easy when your young. As you age the metabolism slows down. I think mine has slowed to sloth speed.

I’m almost certain my metabolism killed himself.

Henry Rollins had a great story of his journey into weight lifting.

Long story short he had an old Vietnam vet coach he who took him under his wing.

Look it up. Pretty good way to motivate yourself
