This is our first year on a new lease in Williamson county. Two of us think he’s 6 and the other two think he’s 4, either way he’s getting a pass this season in hopes that he’ll spread the seed and that one more year of protein will put some more bone on him. We have 1500 acres surrounded by two rock quarry’s, a 600 acre place and a 3000 acre place that nobody hunts. What’s yalls thoughts on age?

I’d kill him opening day if I saw him. That’s an old deer.

That deer ain't four. Bulking up now for the rut, he will look even older in two months. A very nice brute.

That deer has already spread his genes for atleast 5.5 year min…. I’d be tempted to say + 2 to that. If it was me I think he ends up finishing out and showing 7. Unfortunately until oct it’s a roll of the dice on age. With that said, he ain’t 4

Letting him roll another year means he might breeds 0-3 does

Difficult to tell age this time of the year but agree with the others he is well beyond 4, I am thinking 6 just from that. With the rains of this year is a great one for antler growth and who knows what the next year or two will bring.

Agree with Bobo on the breading of 0-3 does that could be 0 to 6 fawns.

See wht he looks like mid October before making the decision of take or not if even given the chance, the old ones have a way of being real visible now and not so much come season.

And letting him walk another year means he may drop on the antlers next year if its a drought year too.

If you like him, shoot him. His genes are out there. But remember, 50% of the genes come from the doe side….

Agree with Bobo, older buck, take him out if you get the chance. Over the years I've let way to many older nice bucks walk and never see them again.

He would not make it another season if I saw him. I believe he is well beyond 4 personally.

You have 2 guys on the lease that know a thing or two about deer again and 2 that need to work on aging.

This ^^^^^^^^. He was four at one point in his life and it ain't this year. He is going to be at least 6 now and I am guessing by the body size and characteristics he his going to be post mature....7+. He will look his age in late Sept. He has been involved in the breeding his whole life...not the extent early on as it was the last few years but even then they do not cover that many does. Then factor in your fawn survival rate, then those that make it to 1 yrs old and it gets even worse. If you have a lot of mature bucks then he may not even been on your place by the rut, there could be a dominant buck that would push him off of your lease.

5.5 minimum and I'd say probably 6.5.

Boom......whop!

Williamson county ... who ever sees that deer first will likely take the shot. I'm going 5.5+

He's mature, I see no reason to let that deer walk.

He could throw a fawn that looks just like him, he could breed nothing at all, or his offspring could be a no brow 6 or a goofy 7 point etc. Native free range deer are Hinz 57 mutts, the gene pool that created him is in the rest of your deer, it was before he was born and it will still be there after he is gone.

I agree with redchevy and just about everyone else. Great deer, old enough and worrying about decisions based on who breeds who and when is an unrealistic task.

Actually more than 60% based on what I've read.

Seems like a broken record at this point, but as with all animals, deer move. If he's around now, you may as well have a go given the level of maturity he appears to be at.

If you're that concerned about spreading his genes, suppose you could always get him later in the season IF you happen to keep him around that long once the guns start going off with any type of regularity.

Spreading his genes around is a misnomer in my books as a reason to not shoot a buck. Reading some studies on that and was surprised when the number of a dominant buck being very prolific if he breeds 7 does. Say he breeds 10 a year, that is still not a very high number, especially when you factor in all the reasons that could take him out in a year. The only thing I would wait on is to see what he looks like in the fall. I think then he will look much older and mature than he does now. Good luck on whatever you all decide.
