Figured as season gets close i would put up these pics to get some guesses and allow people to hone their skills of on-the-hoof scoring. This one has some curve to his tines, so makes it a little more fun…

First photo the buck in question is on the left, second from behind, third is a perspective show for size comparison subject buck on the right.

Somes have formulas for loss of velvet, but not here.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

I have the nine just under 150. So probably 143-150 when finished

I hate judging velvet deer. Nice redcoat

Same here. Bucks still in Velvet. Don't know the region involved (Example: Hill Country Deer are typically smaller bodied in most places), daytime pics are better than nighttime pics, etc.....

I rather see them with a hard antler and know the locale.

Hard antler pics should be coming soon. Most deer at my
Place are rubbing velvet end of august. So hopefully soon.

Was just trying to keep deer in focus and keep people away from the OT section as season gets closer .

No problem at all posting deer in velvet for either age or score. Im, personally, just real busy and dont want to spend time when its so difficult to tell. Maybe im feeling guilty since I usually post a lot of age/score threads and then Im not participating much in others threads right now.
I agree any thread about deer is better than any thread about anything else. up

You were correct BOBO, southern OK deer, so if that’s what you meant by north then yes, its a northern deer. Not a kansas or iowa deer 😂

Velvet scoring is a crap shoot but all I’ll say is no where close to big enough to shoot.

138-142 from those pics if he was done growing. If he kept growing then the score is going to change.

Yeah hes been done growing for a while

I was thinking the curve to his tones would throw off some. I was thinking high 30’s to low 40’s based on some circe adding “unseen” inches. Of course this is all dependent on how much mass rubs off with that velvet confused2

To be fair, this is not the same ranch i shot the 161 off last year, but the rest i agree with you BOBO, this isn’t a texas deer, and i have been shocked at the difference in size between the deer on this place and deer i used to hunt in texas.

How far from last year deer?

If that deer was off my old place closer to Kansas I'd add a touch more to it. Although I was shocked y'all weren't closer to my old place.

I hate velvet deer but context wise I feel like I’m right in my methodology.

Red coats just hide beam and mass very well. Pretty deer look forward to being proven right clap

As the crow flies about 30-35 miles i think, give or take. A little more north. About an hour or so south of OKC.

I think you are closer than most here. The curved tines hide quite a bit and this deer is hiding inches of spread and some mass quite well. We passed him all season last year and he has just gotten bigger. If my son lets him walk this year he may get another year on him. Would be fun to see what he does next year.

Would be a dang good bow buck for my son, there are bigfer out there for sure we have on camera, but this guy is so stinking regular he may be dead just because my son wont be able to hunt as much this year due to starting nursing school and he may have an itchy finger.

Yep, those big bodied bucks can sure throw off your guesstimates. We hunt in TX, about 50 miles S of the KS line. My buddy's TX buck wound up in the mid '50's......I"m betting Bobo's guess is pretty darn close.
