Neighbor called to check on me, since I did some shredding this morning - first time after the shoulder surgery. And I asked about his knee replacement at the VA in Temple. They had operated a month or so ago to take out some steel plates so that it could be healed up prior to the knee replacement. That went well, but they pushed back the replacement till late August. Then they pushed it back to late September, and now they have postponed it till future notification. Are any of you guys having anything done at the VA? Is there a virus shutdown of some sort?
The neighbor is in big pain. I’ve quit whining about my shoulder because he hurts far worse than I do right now.

Not sure about the VA but hospitals here in FWD are restricting visitors again so I would imagine they're scaling back surgeries again too.

I was in the hospital for tests over the weekend and when released on Monday I was told to go the VA and update with them. I called for an appointment and I was scheduled for Tuesday.
It might be that they have no surgeon. Currently I am seeing a traveling Doctor at the Abilene VA clinic. And anything elective, non emergency at the local hospitals are on hold because of Covid.

I just got a couple of emails from VA in the last week. The first one was notification that valet parking has resumed at Houston. The second was that my primary doctor is no longer with VA , and that he has been replaced by a PA.

We have a big management meeting tomorrow at the hospital to discuss several Covid related things and one of the topics will be shutting down elective surgeries (again) that would require a post surgery hospital stay. This is done to free up hospital rooms for potential Covid cases. Right now we only have 7 beds available. If it gets bad enough, we might shut down all surgeries so that we could use the pre-op and PACU rooms as patient rooms. That would put us way over the number of licensed beds, but I suspect if it came down to it, we'd tell the goobermint to pound sand. We're going to take care of the sick folks, no matter what.

Our hospital is short staffed. People are quitting the industry.
There is talk of stopping elective surgery at the hospital.

I don't know about the VA but I called to set up a few dr appointments and they said the first ones were in late Sept so IDK. I'll update,I was running low on medication with one dr so they slipped my in yesterday which is highly unusual but I needed my meds.Another dr appointment was 1 1/2 hours later to get something, maybe cancer, cut off my finger and they also made a appoint for me.My third one was today about a sore on the bottom of my foot so I have no complaints about my dr's.

Hooker, if the damage isn’t too bad, you’ll have the hand back in at least limited use in 2 weeks or sooner. I’m just a bit over 3 weeks along, and I’m opening jars with both hands and have been for a week or more. I can do some stuff now with the ‘bad’ hand and arm, and my damage was very bad.
If I’m any indication, you are going to be pretty darn weak for a good while.
Best of luck!

No problems with the Katy or Houston VA.
Are you aware that if your appointment is more than 30 days out you can request to get seen by a civilian clinic?
The wait may be due to doctors still doing telemedicine and not coming in. All of my interactions over the last year or so have been great so not really worried about a big drop in service.

This is what I do. Although it took them a while to actually find me a civvy provider and get an initial appointment set up. Once that was over with, everything has been really smooth.

Best of luck! Thanks, My real problem is I only have the use of one arm and that one has been repaired twice now, I Really believe I have tear damage now.

If you have use of the arm, and pain is the issue, I found years ago that acupuncture really can reduce pain. I tried it because I needed some relief (the right shoulder, back in the 90’s). I had no confidence in acupuncture, but a lady friend said she used it to take pain away from a damaged foot. I trusted her, so I gave it a try.
It will remove pain, but won’t repair damage, which is why I finally had to choose surgery.

The neighbor is in big pain. I’ve quit whining about my shoulder because he hurts far worse than I do right now. Tell him to request an outside doctor to do the replacement if he doesn't want to wait. I've used outside doctors for denture replacement and cataract surgery. It was no problem at all.
