I am looking at possibly hunting a few miles north of Northfield Texas (between Turkey and Childress). I know there are both WT and Mule deer, but curious in other peoples experience what the rough split is and how the numbers are? Hoping for a good number of WT if I decide to go this route.

I hunted due west of there at the base of the caprock (Floyd County) for a few years. Mule deer were sporadic but present. More whitetail than MD at about 80/20%. MD were on top and came down in the evenings. Didn't see many and mostly does. Overall deer population was decent but heavily dependent on water. I killed my biggest WT off that ranch at 151". We had no crops and relied on feeders.

It is really going to depend on the ranch, type of terrain and the cover as far as the ratio of WT to MD. It can vary greatly from one ranch to the next out there.

We hunted some of the Cogdell ranch back West of Northfield several years ago; dominated by Mule Deer but my dad shot the best WT he's ever seen off of that place.

im 13 miles south west of northfield, we have mules and whitetail, prolly 65-35 ratio do have some decent whitetails, majority of mulies are average or below average, depending on your neighbors could be great or not worth the long drive depending on where you are coming from.

We hunted in Turkey last year. Many more mule deer than whitetails where we were. It wasn’t unusual to see 20-30 mule deer in the wheat field at a time. The whitetails stuck more to the canyons but would come to the corn feeders. Lots of pigs in that area as well.
You should have been here yesterday!

Thanks a lot guys. Looked at a place north of Northfield, and a place off the caprock between Floydada and Turkey. Both pretty cool ranches. Really leaning toward the one on the edge of the caprock. It has some pretty rough canyons and also some more gentle thick cedar (almost too thick) hills that I am thinking may hold MD in the rough country and WT in the more gentle/thick stuff. It needs some food plots and more water added for sure though.

We got drawn and hunted Caprock Canyon for deer a couple years ago. Stayed in Childress and drove back and forth every day, in the dark. Saw LOTS of deer every trip between Esterline and Turkey, and mostly all WT's, until the stretch between Turkey and Quitique. Then the MD seemed to be more prevalent. Always saw lots of MD in any of the winter wheat fields, but the Wt's seemed to be around the edges and those rolling cedar hills

You guys have any luck? Mostly Mule deer in the Caprock Canyon itself? Bet that was a fun hunt, as that's pretty cool country

We saw a lot of aoudad (not legal then, on the deer hunt), and hogs. Deer were either species, and my partner killed a 20" 3x4 mule deer. I hunted for a big one, or a mature WT buck and never pulled the trigger on any of the small ones I saw. It is a fun hunt, and there are tons of deer which go out the east side to eat in the private wheat fields across the county road.

Wheat is key as it will attract and hold the MD...hunted 5 miles S of Turkey in Hall County and on our ranch lease had both large canyons, thick cover and also large CRP fields. North end of ranch more mule deer. We had a close to 50/50 but way more MD does than bucks for sure. Down closer to Northfield my friends that hunt that area report WT/MD to be more like 70/30.

Like others have said really depends on the ranch. If there are plenty of canyons and not much for flat, mesquite plataues then you will most likely be dominated by mule deer. If you have some mesquite plateaues mixed in the canyons we do notice the WT's will do pretty well with Mule Deer. One thing I have really noticed is to put two feeders at each stand. If there are mule deer at one feeder the WT does will not come in (the Bucks will). The Mule Deer does are very aggressive towards WT does so by having two feeders (100+ yards apart) the WT does tend to stick around more and show up more. We missed applying for MD doe management tags this year but we really need them next year as we are getting a bit overrun with Does in Childress County where MD populations are high. Actually hoping the state maybe looks at a season for them but Childress County Terrain varies so greatly that one area may have plenty and another area have none. The good news is we are in year 4 I believe of the Antler restrictions so the Mule Deer Bucks should be really good this year!!

My place is in Silverton half in the canyon and half out. I would echo the prior statements of whitetail being on the outskirts of the caprock and Mulies closer to the canyons or on nearby wheat fields. Wheat fields and water are key but you can glass the canyons and spot the mulies if you put the time in. Feeders can be hit or miss but often will Attract does and in the rut that means big bucks.

We use to have MD around Kirkland. I haven't seen any now in 7-8 years. Terrain in the county is diverse.

Anybody ever try to get Mule Deer on MLD? talking to one of the biologists up here it sounded like that could be a possibility. Would be nice to be able to hunt them during the rut.
