Hello, new to the forum, and was wondering what y’all thought on using the 147 grain hornady eldm bullet in 6.5 prc. What do y’all think of using this bullet and setup for elk, and how does it perform on whitetail? Thanks

It will be fine on elk.
Probably too much fun for white tail, but they will die.

You might do a little search on the 147’s performance on game. I had planned to try them but friends had questionable results and I have since seen other posts on Long Range Hunting forum that had similar less than stellar results. The 143ELDX has gotten excellent reviews however.

Plenty of "target" bullets have filled many freezers.

I haven't killed an elk, or any elk sized game with a 6.5 147 ELDM, but I have killed a couple dozen whitetail does and a slew of hogs with it. I get exits about half the time with it. No problems yet when I put the bullet where it belongs. Probably wouldn't be my first choice on elk, but it should work if you do your part. I'd personally choose a 140 partition or accubond first.

Wouldn't be my bullet of choice, but put where it needs to go and I sure would not bet against it.

Plenty of "target" bullets have filled many freezers. I know that. I’ve used a Nosler Custom Comp on a javelina before. I don’t expect them to perform as good as purpose made hunting bullets though. I’m not sure I would do it again, however.

I’m not sure I would do it again, however. The specifics of this topic, 6.5mm 147 gr ELD-M. ELD-M has performed similarly to A-Max. And A-Max has successfully kept me from very long tracking jobs, more than any other bullet. Because I've used it more than any other bullet. And I used it because the load was gnat's azz tuned with that bullet. So any bad shot would have been may fault. In these times, my bet it O.P. can ONLY get 147 ELD-M. In better supply options, yes, go with a specifically designed hunting bullet. But 6.5 mm bullet have been THE most scarce over the last 18 months. And 6.5 PRC is one of THE most scarce factory ammunition options out there. So my bet it, it is the only ammo he can get for his rifle.

If the OP had just said deer I would agree and it is probably the case that the 143gr is harder to find. There is a reason. But given that the 6.5 is on the minimal end of elk preferred rounds I would tend to look at projectiles that are known solid performers. I have killed Red Stag with the 135gr Berger’s but that wasn’t planned it just happened to be what I had at the time. 147’s will probably be fine but others who I know that have used them don’t anymore so I decided I didn’t have to pee on the electric fence to see for myself.

Sorry, don't know much about the 147s you asked about. Didn't do it for a 6.5 PRC, but I recently loaded these 160 gr. monsters up for a 6.5 CM to play with ... pretty sure it wouldn't have any issues dropping an elk. Only shot paper at 200 yards with them, but they grouped very well using 41.2 gr of H4350 (over Hornady recommended max), reliability poppin' out at just under 2600 fps. Performed much better than I expected, will test at longer range in the near future. https://www.midsouthshooterssupply....rain-round-nose-with-cannelure-100-count

I almost got some of those to play with actually, mainly because I didn't want bullets with the cannelure that the 160s have...but I ultimately decided to play with the largest gr. bullets I could find LOL. How did those perform for you?

How did those perform for you? They shot very well loaded with Reloder 16 running 2700fps. I loaded 100 for a friend to take to Africa and he and his wife shot Bunch of Plains game and a Leopard with it.

Might have to pick some up just to compare the results this hunting season. Definitely going to start off the season with the interlocks though.
