Was mowing along a fence-line today and came upon a Bat that apparently had landed there and just died. Still holding on by one foot.

In all my years I've encountered all kinds of things either entangled or impaled on barbed wire....but never found a Bat.

We have 'Butcher Birds' here year 'round so I am used to seeing all manner of insects, lizards and the like impaled on the barbs.

I've found dead Deer, live Deer, Horses, Owls, etc....tangled in fences. Just never seen a bat hanging from a wire until now.

That is a first for me to see even in a picture.

I’ve heard of a bird on a wire but this is … a little weird.

I think a shrike found an injured bat and pinned his azz on the fence. I've seen frogs, lizards, snakes, rodents, and all manner of insects pinned up by a shrike. A bat is just a mouse with wings, to a shrike.

Wouldn't touch that thing, a sick bat isn't something to mess with.

I considered that....and even though the bat is very close to one of the barbs, it's clawed foot *one of them* was wrapped around the wire like it had been holding on.

It isn't impaled on the barb, just very close to it.

But, yes...Loggerhead Shrikes *AKA Butcher Bird* will pin all kinds of things on barbed wire. I also find a variety of things stuck on the ends of Yucca plants we have here and sometimes Honey Locust thorns. I'll take some pics next time I come across something.

I don't know what caused the demise of the bat *natural death or not*.....just kind of weird to see one hanging on a fence.
