A few weeks back I been seeing these post on these 44mags, and I just happened to catch wind of a Winchester 1894 with the straight stock, octagon barrel, with the metal but plate.. it’s a beautiful little lever gun light weight level is like butter etc.. but holy smokes that metal but plate is sharp on the top and the bottom.. the first shot I knew it drew blood, of course it took my dense arse another 10 shots to make sure it was definitely drawing blood! But sure enough I get home take my shirt off and the wife was like what the heck is wrong with your shoulder and I got 6-7 nice little half moon cuts right there from that dang but stock.
This thing may get buff down and re-blued because it’s pretty rough!
The 220 grain match master bullet loaded with 24.5 gr of H110 I was able to shoot about a 1.5” group at 50 yards with open sights off the bench rested on a rubber block. I’m pretty proud of this little gun, but if your not holding it right it’s the most unpleasant thing I’ve ever shot and I have shot some down right silly calibers without brakes.
Anyway hope y’all get a good laugh and me being a big ole wiener!

Kind of makes me rethink the 460XVR rifle I want to build… I’ll just be sure and use a rubber buttstock

Even a slip on rubber buttstock pad will make that much easier on the shoulder until you decide what to do, might not look right but it will be much less painful. Try an 1895 Winchester in 405 Winchester with the steel butt plate some time or the lighter weight 1895 carbine in 30-06 with 220gr factory loads. Congrats on a fine little rifle, just get it more comfortable to shoot.

I’ve had to quit with high recoil stuff, flinch too much as I get older I hear that, plus the wear and tear on your shoulder.. one would think a little ole 44 mag wouldn’t be so rough which it wouldn’t be but that metal butt plate is super sharp one good thing about it is when you run out of ammo you can use it as a head cracker!

ive had numerous ruger 44 mags at least 4 autos and a 77 44 wood stock and a win 16 in 44mag 94 maybe every one of those has a suprising amount of recoil especially with 240 gr loads, just bought another 44 auto with a peep thought it would be fun but discovered with my old eyes i dont think i could hit a trash can at 25 yards ,looks good in the safe though

I've got a 1967 vintage Ruger .44 Mag carbine and have to say next to my ol' T/C Hawken .54 (sharp, brass butt plate) it's the toughest SOB to sight in I've ever had!

That 1894 is a great gun. Took a few deer with mine over the years. Good handling, quick to the shoulder, and holds quite a few rounds

I love it, and I may carry it hunting some this year. I need to shoot some at 100yards so I can see if I can hit anything

Winchester 94 44 Mag Trapper was my Dad's deer rifle for years. Killed most of his deer with Winchester 240gr hp factory ammo or 240gr Hornady XTP loads I loaded for it. They make a fine short range deer rifle and are very handy.
