A buddy invited me to his place in the Hill Country a few weeks ago, mainly to check cameras, check feeders, and do some work. He said my son and I could shoot all the pigs we see and if we happen to see a Huge Axis then that was fair game too. Woke up Sunday morning to make breakfast and looked out the cabin window and had a bunch of Axis eating corn we had poured out on the ranch road. The ranch road being 30 yards from the cabin front door. There are always 20-30 whitetail in the front yard but rarely Axis. Anyway, lots of bugling and sparing between several bucks with white antlers but I never could make out this one in the dark very well. As it started to get lighter outside I woke up my son (who can see better than I can), and the second he lifted my binoculars up he said Dad that is a huge Axis. As I'm trying to make the decision to shoot him or not, one of the big bucks with white antlers bugles and starts bowing up to this one. As he got face to face this one raised his head up and the other one started backpedaling. All of that gave me the look I needed so I could make out the dark horns. Problem is he grabbed his doe and started to leave. Had to get the cabin door open which squeaked and made all the 30 plus deer right in front of me jump and look at me. So I'm sitting in the floor of the living room, gun resting on my knee and the door jamb, in my socks, and shoot this buck at 100 yards through a tiny opening in the mesquites at the last available chance I had before he was gone.

Measured 34" beams and 165 pounds dressed out.

Great friend, great Axis and your son was with you to boot. It doesn't get much better than that.

This is kind of like a storybook tale. Everything fell into place and you and your son have a great experience and a dang nice Axis to boot. Congrats!
