No doubt. I bet if you asked the deer he doesn’t want to be put down.

I agree, he’s endured the worst part so let him live in the neighborhood happily ever after.

Amazingly tough critters

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

You need to look closer again at him.
He will not make the winter months from the looks of him. He may not even make it past the summer if he has an infection already.

Looking at the yard fences, my guess would be he hung that back leg in a fence while jumping it. Seen many a deer hung in fences...those that survived usually had severe leg damage or breaks. Deer survive a lot of injuries.

Man, that is hard to look at. I have seen several three legged deer and they get around fine but it sure looks like infection may get that one.

I’ve been apart of 3 similar tears/breaks

They all were caught up in the ornate type yard fences

Not my fence, I don’t water my yard much less an ornate fence

Idk, what you call them but wrought iron w the New Orleans Saint symbol on top, not cheap

That back leg catches, it’s a bad deal

A few years back i regularly saw a three legged doe that had two fawns. Her back leg was a stub from being mangled in about the same place as the buck in the picture. That fall she was chased by several different bucks and she had two fawns the following spring. My guess is that unless something else happens to him this buck will be chasing does next fall.

I'd say the coyotes will put him down. He will be an easy meal the weaker he gets.
He's hanging around houses, so why nobody has called the Game Warden to put him down is puzzling to me?

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I see pelvic bone, and that's probably not good. If he can survive the infection, IMO he's likely to make it.

I hear folks call the game warden all the time for hurt deer. Many times they are told to let nature work its course. Ive found several deer caught in fences etc. if they cant walk then I am on the side of putting them down. If they are mobile and eating then I only think its fair to let them fight for it. As many have said wild animals are tuffer than we give them credit for. If the infection doesnt kill him he may have a better chance than we are giving him. If he was frequenting my back yard it would have a full free choice feeder water and watever else i could do for him.

Back in 92', 93', I hunted the 'figure 3' ranch in Schleicher county. There was new goat wire fence that separated 2 pastures. The kind with 2 strands of bar wire on top. We found numerous deer, many still alive, that their back leg got twisted in the two top strands. I swore if I ever owned a ranch I wouldn't build my fence that way. So we didn't. 48" red strand goat fence pretty much over our whole place. I still found a fawn caught up in a weird twist of fate. Literally. I leave all our gates to cross pasture, open now.
