Bought a Henry .44 from a fellow THF member. It has a Skinner Express sight on it. Took to the pasture to see how it was shooting and I'm consistently high. The grouping isn't terrible, just high. I screwed the rear sight all the way down and that helped, but my groups are still 3-5" high. I thought maybe I was just pulling up, but I can't seem to aim low enough to hit center.

Do you need to add a taller front sight?

Yes, or use a 6 o'clock hold. Is the ring bottomed out? If not, you could grind the bottom of the shaft a bit. Also, will it take an aperature? A smaller hole will make the field of view smaller but it will force you to center the front perfectly. That might move it down a hair.

Not quite bottomed out, but I don't know if it'd be enough to fix the issue. The aperture unscrews. Would I need to order a smaller one? I think the easiest route may just be to order a new front sight.

I've never used the Skinner sights, but I do love peep sights on my target rifles. I like to use the bead type front sights and using just the tip of the bead as your point of target, I've never had a problem with low shooting. Using only the tip of the bead also gives you much more precision. You probably already know all this, but I just want to help if I can.

Didn't know this. Thanks for the tip!

This and too small an aperture on a hunting rifle can make it more difficult to use early and late, small aperture is great for precision but does not let much light through

Good to know. It has the "standard" aperture on it now. I ordered one smaller (medium) and a taller front sight. Hopefully that fixes my issue. Thank you, I'm new to lever action rifles, so this is a learning experience for me.

How tall is the front sight now? That'll tell you how much taller you need to go and still have some adjustment left. Skinner has a good choice of front sight heights.

CLICK HERE FOR SKINNER FRONT SIGHT CHOICES

They also have apertures in many sizes too but I think the taller front sight is what you need first, then get more precise (possibly) with a smaller aperture.

Pass the gravy.

It has the .500" front sight. I went ahead order the tallest front sight (.625") since I have plenty of room to raise the rear sight if need be.

Go to skinners web-site and order a blade front sight, get a high one. Take it to the range with a file. Paint the front face of the blade with white appliance paint. After you get everything where you want it squirt red threadlock all around the front sight groove and let her dry.
