Probably a bad time to build with wood prices but after the first of year I need to have a deck built at the house. My question...Forgive me if this is obvious to some people, but the deck will wrap around the back corner of my house covering the area where perma-pier added I think 5 piers when they did some work last year. The foundation work is lifetime warranty and I don't want to block access to the piers if work is ever needed to be done. Has anyone run into something like this and what is the best way to allow access to the piers through the deck without it looking like crap? Hatches?
Or is it just normal to pull the decking up if work needs to be done?

I’d just unscrew the top of the deck where I needed access, if you ever had to.

Thanks guys. Literally didn't think about that until I was typing this, then it was actually really obvious.

Really depends on how far off the ground the surface is. We always build trap doors either in the surface for clean outs or on the outside skirting for crawling underneath. The simple fact is that screws never like to come back out after the first few months [DAMHIKT]. I have pulled up over 100 decks in my time and we never even bother with trying to pull screws. We just pry with big deck removal tools and pop the boards up, then cut the screws off later.

If you are not too close to the ground, have them put in a door with a gate latch in the side of the skirting.

Oh and one more thing, If the builders buy from a box store like Lowe's it can save you money over buying from a small lumber yard. I just saved one client over $2500 on their project by doing this.

I don’t know about that…
Our local lumber yard is almost half price on bulk lumber compared to the big box lumber stores, both Lowe’s and HD.

Cheaper on decking wood? I should have been specific about the wood I was talking about....treated pine and cedar are both way cheaper at the box stores right now than any yard in the city or out here in Terrell. Only McCoy's comes close to their price and they are still higher. Example...on my last job the cheapest cedar 5/4" decking from the yards was $57 for a 16' board. Lowe's has it for $37. No way you are going to find that for $18.50 a board anywhere else. I shop prices weekly and haven't seen it that cheap [under $20] since before March of last year. Treated pine same size was $17...Lowe's has it for $11.

Not sure what you mean by bulk lumber unless you are talking big quantities.
