Gonna break out my grandfather's old Stevens Crackshot. He used it as a boy on the homestead ranch in Eastern CO for cottontails, jackrabbits and prairie chickens. I don't know exactly how old it is or how many rounds went through it but he was born in 1908. I would love to know some of the stories it could tell but Gramps died 3 weeks shy of his 100th birthday. Laid in a couple of boxes of shorts to play with and if it groups well (rifling still looks pretty good) I'll use it on a few cottontails here in TX.

Not my grandfather's but as well used as it is, I still wish it could talk and tell it's stories. I would offer to meet up for a crackshot rabbit hunt we lived closer to each other.

I want to play!! This is my Great Grandfathers Crackshot. Story is that he would load it with rat shot and drive cattle by shooting them in the hind end - rat shot stung, but from a distance wouldn't penetrate. Not sure if that is true or not, but with the 22 shorts, mebbe. This sat in my grandfathers closet for many years, then after GGF died, GF gave it to me, knowing my natural father would have pawned it within hours. I got it in 1969 or 70 when I was a small kid. It hasn't been shot in over 30 years, but I keep a few boxes of shorts in case. Only bad thing, GF had it re-blued before passing to me which decreased value, and either from rat shot or lack of cleaning, the rifling is somewhat pitted, but it shoots straight!

I don't have a Crackshot to share, but I do have an old Martini that I did some serious refurbishing on, once I determined that there was a shooter under all the crud and beaten up stocks. Many hours invested in it, but it turned out fairly well and shoots lights out. The target here if 3, five shot groups, at 50 yards.

The old boy I bought it from had 17 of them, and claimed that they were from a high class Catholic boarding school in England. The school went out of business during WWII, and it was just locked up and forgotten about for 50 years. Some auditor in the Church was going through the books and noted that the school hadn't been opened and inventoried for 5 decades, so when they opened it, they found all kinds of rather nifty things. The Martini stash was one of them, and no one in the Church wanted them so they put them up for sale. I have no idea how much of the story he told me was sales BS or the truth. But I like it even if it was made in Japan 5 years ago.

Since it was your GGF's then GF's gun, I see nothing wrong with your GF having it re-blued. Value is greater to you as a family gun they used. It's not like you intend to sell it. Those kind of rifles are someday passed on with their stories to a younger family member who you trust will appreciate where it came from and not sell it.

Cool, love stories about old family heirlooms. Have a few myself, just wish they could talk and tell (there) stories!

I have the shotgun that my great grandfather brought when he moved to Texas sometime in the 1890’s. Cool old double barreled hammer gun.

I have my Father's crackshot , it led to a fascination for single shot rifles. I have 3 other Stevens, two favorites and one that is either a
44 or 44 1/2 ,
