Have been looking for a bow that is more suitable for the style of hunting I have been doing for awhile now. I dipped my toes back into bowhunting about 10 years ago after a long hiatus. Not wanting to spend a bunch of money at the time, I found a Diamond Iceman for a good price and set it up. Blessed with strength but cursed with a short draw length, any appreciable arrow speed has eluded me even at a 70 + lb draw, which isn't an issue at standard whitetail ranges but can be a handicap out west where shots may range from 60-80 yards or better. Bow was accurate but much past 70 yards and it was running out of gas pretty quick.

A few years back, my wife bought me a Halon 32, which was a game changer as far as shootability was concerned. Smooth as silk and quiet as a mouse, this bow helped me gain a few FPS with a slightly heavier arrow but I could not shoot this bow at any distance whatsoever. 20 yards was money, 30 yards I was driving tacks, 40 yards the groups opened up a bit but was still manageable, 50 yards it started flinging them. 60 + yards it was a real crapshoot. I never could get this bow to be accurate at long range.

A few months ago, I walked into the local bow shop and explained my dilemma and wants; a bow that could shoot as fast as possible and still be shootable, and for it to be a long distance hunting bow. They suggested a Elite Enkore or a Prime bow ( can't remember the name). The prime was smooth but didn't give me the speed. I shot the elite, it was smooth, and at the same poundage several fps faster. I was able to put a few twists in the string and get the poundage up to 80 lbs. and that sent my 410 grain arrow sizzling downrange at 295 fps. I ordered another bow in a different color and waited for it to come in....

It got here last week and I got it set up. due to material shortages like everywhere else, I had to wait for my arrows to come in. Instead of the Gold Tip Pierce ( which i love ) they suggested a Black Eagle Rampage Arrow. Got some arrows set up ( weighing in a 433 grains @ 281 fps ) and went off to the range.

This bow is a shooter. Not any problems drilling the target from 20-70 yards. I could never get the halon to shoot this good. I've got my confidence restored in being able to take a 50 + yard shot again...to be honest, with the Halon, I wasn't really confident much past 30 yards. Calculator says I'm slinging these arrows at 76 lbs of KE, which should be plenty for anything walking on the North American Continent.

Anyone looking to upgrade their bow rig and desires a little bit more flexibility in their hunting scenarios might take a look at the Enkore. Its not a cheap bow ( comparable to the V3 Mathews ) but man, is it a shooter. I tend to keep my bows longer than alot of folks, so upfront cost isn't as much of a factor, as i can see myself shooting this one for 10 years if it holds up.

Congrats on a fine bow choice.

Prime bows are really smooth but I generally liked the draw cycle and shot the Elites I worked on better than the Primes, Hoyt or Mathews.

I’m sure I could draw 80 pounds if I had to maybe. But there is no way I could pull that in front of a deer. How smooth is your draw? Are you setting this up just for elk?

extremely smooth. its "heavier but not rougher" if that makes sense.

In this instance, being short sucks.....I have to pull 80 lbs to achieve what most guys with a normal draw length could achieve with 60-65 lbs.

I built this bow to get as much speed as i could get. With the arrows I had built, its about the same speed as my old bow but shooting a heavier arrow so I'm getting much more KE out of it.

I didn't set it up for elk per se, but what it has to be able to do is drill arrows up to 80 yards, as i have a ( scheduled but who knows with Covid ) red stag hunt coming up in Argentina where the shots typically are gonna range on the longer side.

Good luck if you get to go on your hunt. I would be moon drawing every time at 80 pounds.

I worked on a couple bows that were 25 inch draw and 80lbs that I had no problem drawing and shooting even with my 29 inch draw. One was an Elite the other a Strothers both were smooth bows.

In College I shot an 80lb Browning Nomad for one season and getting ready shot thousands of rounds. That old bow had only 50% letoff but that was about 40 years ago and I would not even attempt t shoot that old bow now even if I still had it.

Txtrophy85 I hope you get to make that hunt for Red Stag, that should be a fun trip. Good luck on getting to go and the hunt.

With the let off rates being so high now, the higher poundage actually holders and shooters better for a lot of people. Does for me atleast.

Donate to TX Youth hunting program.... better to donate then to waste it in taxes

This bow has an adjustable let off, from 75-90%. I think i have it set on 75% to pick up an extra 2-3 fps.

its a smooth bow, no issues drawing it from a seated position

I've found that most people do not draw a bow in a way that allows for their back muscles to do the work, which is what (imo ) should be. I shoot a wrist strap release, which is now frowned upon by alot of archers, but you don't have to give it the death grip and allows for a smooth draw, not a violent jerk motion trying to get it to break over.

I focus alot on back exercises during my workouts, lots of dumbbell and seated rows, and this keeps everything used to pulling a heavy weight. I can go 6 months without touching a bow, pick it up and its no trouble at all to draw.

You can train and condition yourself to pull 80 lbs in a short time, its not impossible. I'm not a big guy i'm 5'6 and 150 lbs

Honestly I've never drawn a 80lb bow. 25 years ago I would have probably hunted with one. Now days the bows keep getting faster and I've gone from a 70lb to a 60lb. I've really tried to work on drawing smoothly when sitting in treestands to not get the deer on alert. I wouldn't mind going back to a little bit longer axle to axle bow at some point. I feel like my accuracy at distance is a lot better with a longer bow.

If you have a normal draw length, anywhere from 28-29”, there is no need to shoot a 80 lb bow, unless you just want blazing speed.

What I’m doing with 80 lbs most bows will do at 65 with a 28 1/2” draw.

Update:

This bow is insanely accurate. Not even close to the Halon in terms of 40+ yard accuracy.

I’m gonna keep the Halon for a ranch bow but I’m more than thrilled with the Enkore
