Can't find any. I recently got a 454 Casul that uses small rifle primers. I want to reload and have everything but the primers. All the regular catalog folks are out of stock? Why? What is causing the shortage?

Civil unrest.
Gun grabber president potentially getting in office, and he did.
More gun sales than ever.
Primers are going to the big ammo makers that are using them up to fill huge orders.
Remington shutting down for months, and had a billion dollar back order to fill once they did get moving again.

Hand loaders left in the dark.

This is what I am afraid of.....when hunting season rolls around and the folks who are hunters but not necessarily shooting enthusiasts come out and they can’t get ammo..... holy cow.... it will be off to the races again to see who can find it and accumulate what they can afford.

Yes, I have been under a rock. In fact maybe I should have stayed there. A small house out in the Big Bend area all by myself- might be just what the Doctor ordered. I could spend all day just fiddling around.
IN ANY EVENT, I am suspicious by nature. "What's that stranger over there doing?" kind of guy. So.... yeah. Is this some kind of a thing to disarm the American people because there was a lot of unrest in many parts of the country? Exactly what parts or components of a primer, (the metal, the fumigate, etc.) are in short supply? Why aren't other products that use the same materials unavailable? Doesn't seem logical.
What really gets me, if that is the real reason for the shortage, I'd bet my bottom dollar that virtually NO CRIME is committed with reloaded ammunition. Most criminals aren't smart enough to reload ammo. Those who reload weren't causing anyone harm.

I had a thread a while back, saying we need another primer manufacturer. I cannot get the answers I need as far as what Haz-Mat is involved, storage of said Haz-Mat, ect, ect. I am quite sure there is red tape.

I've got the land, just need to know the details and cost.

As best I could tell, the component that makes a primer work has nitrocellulose in it. The cup and anvil are from a thin sheet of aluminum, and they are pressed out of said sheet.

FYI From wiki:

Mercury(II) fulminate - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury(II)_fulminate

Mercury(II) fulminate, or Hg(CNO)2, is a primary explosive. It is highly sensitive to friction, heat and shock and is mainly used as a trigger for other explosives in percussion caps and detonators. Mercury(II) cyanate, though its chemical formula is identical, has a different atomic arrangement; the cyanate and fulminate anions are isomers. First used as a priming composition in small copper caps beginning in the 1820s, mercury fulminate quickly replaced flints as a means to ignite black powder charges in muzzle-loading firearms. Later, during the late 19th century and most of the 20th century, mercury fulminate or potassium chlorate became widely used in primers for self-contained rifle and pistol ammunition. Mercury fulminate has the distinct advantage over potassium chlorate of being non-corrosive, but it is known to weaken with time, by decomposing into its constituent elements. The reduced mercury which results forms amalgams with cartridge brass, weakening it, as well. Today, mercury fulminate has been replaced in primers by more efficient chemical substances. These are non-corrosive, less toxic and more stable over time; they include lead azide, lead styphnate and tetrazene derivatives. In addition, none of these compounds require mercury for manufacture, supplies of which can be unreliable in wartime.
PreparationDecompositionIn popular cultureSee alsoExternal links
Mercury(II) fulminate is prepared by dissolving mercury in nitric acid and adding ethanol to the solution. It was first prepared by Edward Charles Howard in 1800. The crystal structure of this compound was determined only in 2007.

Midway currently has some CCI Small Rifle 5.56mm NATO-Spec Military Primers #41

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1301170074?pid=170074

You can find some SRP at Midway or PV at least once every week or two....you just got to hit up the site often and jump on them before they're all gone.

What is in short supply isn't the raw materials. The manufacturers just can not keep up with current demand. It's not a conspiracy to disarm America or anything like that at all. It's just the toilet paper panic scenario. This is the third panic that I recall in my lifetime. During non-panic times, manufacturers have no issues keeping up, and actually have surpluses. Therefore can't really afford to build new plants. Then the panic hits and they can not keep up with production demands. Couple that with Remington being out of business for a year, and this shortage maybe lasting a bit longer.

Couple that with the manufacturer’s knowledge that after the panic buying ends, their demand will go in the toilet. With that, who’d build a new plant. I wouldn’t.

I guess they did the math. I hope the math was correct. Remember that after the Obama scare, when everybody stocked up, after that the gun makers were hurting. I don’t remember if the component makers were hurting or not.

I remember when Texaco Chemical spent a billion dollars on a plant that was justified on bad assumptions and math. They didn’t even know it till I gave them the real math. It got real quiet in the president’s conference room. Looking back, shoulda kept my mouth shut. Never embarrass the decision makers.

They produce a lot of ammo for governments so not sure how dependent they are on the average consumer

That’s a good point - military demand.

I went ahead and ordered some of the Midway primers. Delivered cost will be about 13 cents each.
