Ancestry.com is a great resource, but it's not cheap, unless you catch the membership on sale....

Dang, that is the same problem we are having in searching our family history. Someone back in the day in Arkansas couldn't read my grandfathers signature and put 2 M's in his last name. My grandmother and father only have 1 M in their last name on the records. Still trying to verify I am on the correct track before I spend too much time chasing bad leads.

You have to remember a lot of people couldn't read and write back then, so names will have different spellings and you just have to verify it as best you can. I usually don't add something to my tree unless I can verify it in 3 different ways. Heck, my grandmother's mother's maiden name was Scarbrough...on some records it's Scarborough, on others it's Scarberry, and some Scarbrough...I found out we had 2 great uncles nobody knew about because they were 17 years older than my great-grandmother and had died by the time my grandmother was born. They were listed on a census as Scarberry...had to track them down and finally got the right information.

I've used several genealogy sites including MyHeritage.com, Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.com.
FamilySearch has been by far the better of the ones I've used.

When I started looking into my genealogy, somehow the word got out and research from past family members before me found it's way to me. Boxes of the stuff. And I use MyHeritage and Ancestry.com as well as anything I can find on the web. I mostly limited mine to grandfathers and grandmothers which is an incredible amount of people to cover as you follow the family lines farther and farther back.

I have grandfathers who fought in pretty much every US related war, both sides of the revolution including a pirate ship captain, both sides of the civil war including a confederate sharpshooter. A frontier texas ranger. An east texas regulator or moderator, can't remember which side. Indentured Servants from Ireland, A long hunter that was nearly killed in a well documented bear attack and another that was one of Daniel Boones sidekicks. Many preachers including a western Oklahoma Shouting Methodist circuit preacher. A lot of my family was killed by Indians as well as killed Indians. Though I originally thought I was mostly Irish and some English, DNA has shown that I descend mostly from Scotland and some of that migration is backed up in the research passed to me. A few important land feature discoveries, first churches and namesake forts are tied to some of my early grandfathers as well. And much more.

Myself having had an adventurous and civil servant background, I find it fascinating to find that many of my grandfathers as far back as I can go have been the same. Most people could care less about a bunch of names and places in a family tree, so my end game is to put together a binder with a page showing the placement of each of my grandfathers and grandmothers in my family tree and their stories or as much as I can find.

The family genealogy books trace the lineage all the way back to Germany. The Hoelscher-Buxkemper part has a website http://www.h-bfamily.org/ But the family book is more impressive, it basically starts with their immigration to Texas.

Thanks for that insight, I might get back online and do some more searching.

My son decided last night to see how far back we could get. Found at least 2 revolutionary war soldiers. Right now we are back to someone born in 1655.

One of the things I find so interesting is the differences in names. If I just go back a generation or two I find Jasper, Newt, Leroy, Elijah, Fletcher for first names!

Ancestry.com was designed and built by the CIA, if you are comfortable with that, have at it.

I traced mine back a few hundred thousand years to a small region in Africa.

When you put your DNA in the hands of others you make not like the results. Some things are best left alone!

On both sides of my family we have traced back to the respective “old country” (Czech and German). Early 1700s as far as they got in both cases.

My paternal grandmother traced the family back to 1620's Virginia when the first of our surname stepped into the New World. He was a cargo master on a ship and returned to England and then returned with his brother.

Our surname was traced back to the 12th century.

My older sis just did the DNA genealogy using 2 different services.

There's some spooky chit coming from all the DNA Genealogy.

Finding out your father is not really your biological father.

Finding out you have a child from many years back.

Challenges to estates from someone the family never heard of because great grand paw or grand ma was keeping a little secret.

Friend of mine found out he has twin sons from a weekend about 50 years ago. That one ended up in a divorce after a marriage of 45 years with everybody getting a piece of the pie. He never knew about the boys until they came to him. He didn't put his DNA out there but his sister did and that was enough of a match to get a call from a researcher.

We've been here a while. My bloodline from my father's father is traced to San Carlos and White Mountain Indian reservations. My father's mother line is traced up to the Algonquian tribe of and my mother's mom traced back to the Dogrib tribe of Alaska. We also found evidence of the some of our people settling in the Caddo region and all along the Guadalupe River near Gonzales where my father was born.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Through DNA projects, other researchers, and other family trees such as on Geneology.com, I found my 10th great grandfather was Stephen Fuller Austin's great, great grandfather. That person, Richard Austin (a tailor), was born in Bishopstoke, Hampshire, England in 1598. He sailed on the ship Bevis in 1638 during the Puritan migration with two of his several children, his wife, and an indentured carpenter, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony where he died a few months later. I have traced my lineage as far back as a Sir Henry Austin/Austen III (1374-1450) in Benenden, Kent, England. It is fun stuff, but no-one cares outside of me...

Only at the end do you realize the power of the Dark Side.

My Neice was trying to get in the DAR and did some research. From my Dad's Mom's line she supposedly found a line to Pocahontas and then to Edward II, King of England.

I was a little dubious. Don't think she made the DAR cut.
