I was down at my buddies place in Rocksprings on an Axis deer hunt. I'd pushed the hunt out three times since my Covid recovery has been tougher and much slower than I hoped. It was great to finally get out and hunt again. I was looking for a 30" plus axis. I wasn't seeing anything but in the mid to high 20's but nothing with a lot of mass and size. Also, many of the bucks showed freeze effects on their horns from this past bitter cold winter.

We came over the hill into a large herd of Scimitar's Oryx. I thought for a moment, I've never taken one of these, so I switched gears on the hunt. I dropped him at 120 yards with a 143 gr ELD-X bullet from my 6.5 Creedmoor. My buddy said it was the first in and out shot on a scimitar he'd ever seen. I broke both front shoulders and he didn't go very far before dropping. He bottomed out the scale at 350 lbs. We figured he was 375 lbs to 400 on the high side.

Very fun hunt, next summer I'll go after my 30" axis.

Distance is not an issue, but the wind can make it interesting!

Beautiful animal!
Congrats

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
