They shot and killed a large bear in the town a day or so ago. There almost certain its the same bear. I sometimes wonder if I'm sane hunting elk near Yellowstone

LOL, animals do not recognized municipal boundaries. Only humans think such arbitrary designations have meaning.

I had to look up where Ovando Montana was. Looks like it's dead center between Missoula and Helena, and well below Glacier. I didn't realize there where Grizzly Bears in that area.

The story says the bear came earlier and the people then removed the food from the tents. Once the scent of the food was in the tents or maybe the clothes they wore cooking, just moving and securing the food might have been too little too late.

Dang. Sad deal for sure. I learned the lesson a long time ago not to have food in the tent at night, but that was because of coons and skunks, not bears.

Sad. I have hunted for black bear in Idaho just west of Missoula and parks dept. warned of grizzly in the area, protected of course. We saw some huge tracks with long claws that were definitely grizzly.....was not a good feeling walking around in the thick vegetation.

Montana DPW does an excellent job of keeping track of any grizzlies they know about, and post lots of warnings and maps when they are in the area. Generally, if there are carcasses in an area (hunting season), they post every trail and include GPS coordinates of the location and where to stay away from. All of these areas require proper food storage restrictions, and that includes your garbage too. I saw one big grizzly a week ago in Montana, up in a rock slide about 3 miles back up the West Fork of the Madison, but we never had any issues down by campgrounds

I find your responses on these thread rhetorically trifling. First one a few weeks ago you stated firmly that it could of been easily prevented if they hadn't camped in a remote spot, now one happens in town, and you champion only human believe in arbitrary designations have meaning.... Which one is?

Dang. Sad deal for sure. I learned the lesson a long time ago not to have food in the tent at night, but that was because of coons and skunks, not bears. The attack wasn't the tent that spoke of putting their food up, they are the ones that tried to save the other lady actually.

I noticed the adjacent campers had put their food up after the first encounter. Just an observation, but it's easy to think one doesn't need to be as diligent while close to civilization. Those are the bears to worry most about. I didn't read anything that said she had food or someting on her when the attack happened but I'm willing to bet that case.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Sad deal. Sounds like food in the vicinity drew in this aggressive male. Just goes to show how cautious you need to be in grizzly country.

Terrible!!!!!
Having these top of the food chain critters where innocent folks are attacked and killed is sad to say the least, Putting and allowing wolves and other carnivores in places where they can victimize defenseless citizens is the result of idealist idiots who care little of the consequences of their expansion of killers.
I hear they now have DNA from sabre tooth tigers and other prehistoric species. Some bright tree hugger will eventually introduce them in our national parks, Oh to see a pack of these marvelous creatures ravaging a primitive camp ground.

I’m from Tx so I’m not a bear expert
But speaking of bears in City Limits
5-6 years we stayed on the main drag in Pagosa Springs
It was around 10-11pm when we were looking out the window to see a black bear mingling thru
It walked right up to the concrete path that was lit and watched man and woman not 10 yards away walk by
It stopped right where the darkness met the light and just watched, wasn’t afraid.
I guess 300-400 lbs looked big to me
That couple didn’t have a clue

I completely disagree. These attacks are an unfortunate side effect of living in a world that hasn't been completely sanitized with stroller accessible foot paths and handrails. I don't want a society where we destroy everything that has the potential to be the least bit dangerous. Bears are in the same category as motorcycles, whiskey and women with facial piercings. If its not your cup of tea, you can stay home, but don't ruin it for the rest of us. Wolves are a non-issue. There have been 2 attacks by wild, non-rabid wolves in North America since 1923, none in the lower 48. Whitetail deer are much more dangerous. I feel terrible for the victims, but I don't think the proper response to a handful of tragedies is to bubble wrap the world.

WOW. That's awful.....not too much that I'm afraid of outdoors but a grizzly certainly tops the list. There's just not much you can do if one decides to come for you if you're not packing something significant.

The only time I was as nervous was hunting in Namibia, in black rhino country. Head constantly on a swivel, looking for shades of gray!!!
