So my wife purchased a 1/4 of beef from a co-worker. She had someone back out. It was grass fed, grass finished? Wow. I guess I am a antibiotic, herd meat kind guy. This meat is one of the worst pieces of meat I have ever had.

It definitely has a "earthy taste" more like the cow patty or at least Imo thought. Even the ground meat tastes funky to me. So is it just me or am I missing something? Cooked two T bones and one bone in sirloin. Tuff and what was tender was around the bones, but the meat was still pretty pink

I'm (at least) a 4th generation Texan. That being said, the Kansas corn-fed beef that goes to my local, little meat market is outa this world! Everything else tastes like cardboard.

I know. We butchered our own when I was growing up. Lots of ground beef.

What breed is it? Some cows thrive off being grass fed others not so much . Yes I know they all ate just grass before humans ruined them, but here we are.

We raise cows for a living biy raise some cows for what my family is going to eat. I know the owner of one of the largest feed lots in TX. When he says never eat a piece of beef you can buy from a grocery store, I believe him . I guess that's any animal these days . I guess that's another topic though

No idea. We just purchased it after the fact. Pretty dissapointed though.

I do, but I've never sat down to a high end grass fed steak before. All of the grass fed beef I've eaten has been in the form of brisket tacos or brisket sandwiches. There's a little community/store called Gonzalitos in my old stomping grounds that is "known" for their BBQ. They only use grass fed beef. You can always taste the difference (it's not bad). Loaded with onions, jalapenos, & salsa it's pretty fine eating especially when you're hungry.

I tried grass fed from our local butcher shop a couple of times, it didn't have a funky taste but none of it was tender or well marbled. I guess grass fed is supposed to be healthier for you but I prefer grain finished.

Grass fed is for ground beef product ONLY,

the rest is too lean, tough and taste like iron. Most people cook the crap out of it, this causes the bad taste and makes even tougher.

Its the rage with some to be the healthy opportunity

Most people don't eat steak everyday, SO, when you do , you owe it to yourself to buy a good one !!!

Black Angus 2/3 upper choice grade or prime , BOTH GRAIN FED OUT !!!

It is an acquired taste. Personally, I prefer to pull one out of the feedlot and send it to the butcher of my choice. I relate the flavor of the grass fed thing to the breed and also the available grass they have available to eat. Think about a Mule deer killed in the Southern Panhandle vs. one killed in Colorado in the mountain region. The meat tastes way different due to the Texas one browsing on Sage and Forbes That grow where they live. If you ever eat an exotic off of a HF place, you will probably get a hint of the feed they use in the meat. I have killed two different Oryx on different places, ans one tasted like the feed smelled. Lots of factors go in to how a particular animal domestic or wild will taste.

For what it's worth. I had a grass-fed ribeye from Killens steak house south of Houston. It's been ranked as one of the top 30 steakhouses in the country for reference. I ordered a $70 grass-fed ribeye and it just wasn't very impressive. It ate like a cheap value ribeye with all the fat cut off of it. Not to say it was terrible. But man it just wasn't the same. We always feed them out four about 90 days before we butcher one.

I have been to Killens BBQ and their Tex-Mex place, overrated IMO.

All of the grass fed sliced brisket that I've eaten (a lot) has always been very tender and not dry at all, but they do slice it thin.

Man I lived in Pearland when he first started out. When Ronnie was actually running the kitchen at the steakhouse then at the BBQ place. Some of the best food I’ve ever had. The last 4 years or so he’s become a restaurant owner and not a chef and the food has suffered considerably. It really used to be amazing. Now I don’t even go anymore.

Lots of excellent responses but you are really on. The lady that offered it to my wife advised her it it would be ground only. I said "no" knowing I grill and love steaks. Point is we didn't know any better. Live and learn

I was raised eating grass fed/finished beef that was butchered at a local meat market. We split a calf every year with my grandparents. I dont know much about cattle or cattle raising but I know Opie always ran Limousine bulls and Hereford cows. I never had a complaint. We enjoyed that your hamburger patties didnt shrink 50% when you cooked them. Im sure the steaks didnt measure up to the prime marbled ribeyes you get today, but they ate fine to us.

The meat of an animal is what it eats. That is one of the reasons some people feed out feral hogs for 30 days before butchering them. Or the rancher sends a few to feed lot for his own for later butchering.

Only grass fed I eat is venison.

I've had numerous people tell me their grass fed rivals prime.... If you have grass fed prime cuts that will grade prime, I'll take a taste test and admit if I'm wrong. Any thing else is a waste of energy.
