I like the 65gr Gameking over a large dose of Varget. But whatever is available will work if you hit them in the right spot.

My most recent load is the 65 gr Sierra GK over H335. Works quite well. The Nosler Partition and the Nosler 64 gr BSB might actually be better choices, but I don’t know that for sure.

Same here if I'm not packing the 6.8... that's a great .223 load.

70 gr Accubond and Varget is also pretty good.

There has been a lot of those showing up at https://www.shootersproshop.com/loa...-solid-based-w-cannelure-blem-100ct.html and are there now.

They work and perhaps a little better than the old 55gr Trophy Bonded Bearclaw bullets.

Usually use the 6.8 for pigs but when we want a smaller, single pig for BBQ, etc. a 68 or 69gr OTMBT over Varget puts them in the pit.

For ear hole only. I wouldn’t center mass a large pig with a .224 matchking unless having them run off to die is the plan.

is a shot in the ear/CNS necessary, or will the 65 GK penetrate well enough for body shots? Thanks

Mine is accurate enough that I do ear-hole them whenever possible, most often. But I have killed many up to 200lbs with heart/lung shots. Obviously, exit wounds on larger pigs are almost nonexistent due to the lighter weight bullet. But they will get in there and do some damage as long as you take the easy way in. They aren't big bone breakers for sure. Honestly, I'm not nearly as concerned with recovering a pig as I am knowing it will die.

It's not a magic round that transcends the limitations of using a small caliber lighter weight bullet on a larger animal that can be tough to bring down. When expectations align with practicality, it's as good a choice as I've found.

Of course, trying to find .224" 65gr gamekings right now is a unicorn hunt. I actually picked up some 62gr Gold Dots as a back up in case the GK's don't come back before I deplete my supply of them.

No doubt there are plenty of offerings out there that equal, or possibly surpass, this bullet. But so far they work great for me.

This is exactly the reason why I suggested a larger caliber for your AR. With a .22 bullet, you have to be picky with what bullet you hunt with, and you have to be pickier with your shots. Unless you have a tough bullet, you have to specifically try to avoid bone, or narrow yourself to a CNS shot. As you are looking for loaded ammo, you are probably going to have a hard time finding something suitable right now.

The single most destructive .223 bullet that I have found is the old school Hornaday 75g bthp and I believe it is the same bullet that they load in their TAP product line.
