We have a visitor, an old friend from decades before. Good to see her. When I looked out the front window an hour ago, there was a squirrel in the bird feeder. Dang squirrel. I went and got the 22 rifle and plugged the squirrel. She asked what the noise was, and I told her I had shot the squirrel in my feeder. And she said “you have a gun”? Geez! Short version…I have a couple of em. She says that guns scare her. Not anti gun, but afraid of them. Seemed odd since I hunted with her late husband many times. Oh well…

So, did you clean the squirrel or waste it?

Good question. We have a yard Hawk, and he needs easy chow. We have an unspoken agreement. I shoot em and he cleans up my mess.

Sounds like you have an opportunity in front of you.

Tomorrow, when we are sober once more, I’ll see if she wants to shoot a bit. She might…

She says she’ll shoot pistols in the morning. I’ll start her off with a 22 and go from there. She’s willing to try, and that’s all I can ask.

So you wasted the squirrel. That’s cool I guess. I think they’re out of season right now anyway. Not sure though, I’d have to look it up and I really don’t care that much

We woke up a few neighbors last night about 9:30 with a gun. A young buck was hung up in the neighbors fence and had broken his rear leg above the knee. We couldn't get him loose and had to put him down. After the leg came off no problem getting him down. A few came out to see what was going on.

I see what you did there.. She says she’ll shoot pistols in the morning. I’ll start her off with a 22 and go from there. She’s willing to try, and that’s all I can ask. Good on ya.

The deer were acting crazy here yesterday right before dark, about this time. Two doe were grazing near my garden in the pasture. No problem. Then this 8 point in velvet hops over the fence and goes right to the garden. The dogs are barking and I'm clapping my hands, waving, and whistling. He walks to about 60 yds so I lob a few .22 caliber pellets his way. Finally, I put one on his rump at about 50 yds and he snorts and spins around. Then the two does come at him and start chasing him off. Finally they all run off. Peace again.
One shot is all it should take.

Yup, she needs to be another new shooter.
Nothing to be afraid of, once she knows what she knows.
Went through this same deal with my (then) new wife. Scared of shooting. I had a mile of patience, spoke softly, and let her take all the time she wanted. Went .380, then 9mm, then .40 S&W, then .45 ACP. End of the session she was double tapping, loading and chambering her own mags. 15 years later, and she will kill anyone or anything she thinks needs it.

If that were SOP my wife would have been a fling, she would not know and be proficient with handguns. Take a minute and let the lady shoot and likely she will feel the adrenaline and become addicted as we are. JMO

Let us know how the lesson goes, let her shoot a water jug or something that will show effect. More fun than punching paper.

She did want to shoot. Pretty excited about learning something new. I walked her through safety, sight alignment, how to hold the revolver, and trigger pull technique. So we started off with the little S&W 22 (model 63?), and she was dinging the bullseye on the upper torso shaped splatter targets. Shooting quite well. Then we went to the 38 ammo in the 686. Shot the first two in the bullseye and then started anticipating the noise (she had good hearing protection) and recoil and pulling the barrel downward. I could see what she was doing, and we discussed it and she corrected. All in all, she was a real accurate newby shooter. She probably won’t get a handgun, but no longer fears the unknown.
