I'm taking my younger daughter (13 years old) there for about 5 days next week for a little vacation...anyone have any recommendations? She wants to ride some horses, 4 wheelers, do some rafting...what else do we need to do?

Thanks!!

Get a steak at Texas Reds and throw peanut shells on the floor.
I think they have some Jeep rentals as well.

Oh where to begin. Go fishin( if you like i can send you address and you can fish in the river behind our cabin).

If you have a utv bring it, if not you can rent one and ride trails forever
Go to the trail head and hike
Go shopping
Go to bobcat pass and take a utv tour, pretty cool
Take horse rides
Eat a hatch chili burrito at Pete's

Check rr website and look at the calendar , see whats going on. There will be the parade for the 4th

Its a town meant for being outdoors , so do it. Its one of the best places you will ever go .

Pm me and il help you out however I can

Rent a sxs and drive up to one of the lakes. Take the ski lift up to the top of the mountain and walk around. Fish the streams around town and the big tank in town. Plenty of trout to be had.

^^^^^^^^^^ALL OF THIS^^^^^^^^^^

I will add to this a little as we've gone to RR several times and absolutely love it there.
Rent an side x side and do it for an entire day. It is worth every dime. Make sure to find your way up to Greenie Peak...and take a jacket cuz it'll be cool up there. It is a great view from the peak. If you hurry you can see this and also Cabresto Lake which are both on the north side of RR on those trails. Then, get on over to the Goose Lake Trail south of RR and go on up to it. It is a bit of a more challenging, rough trail but the payoff at the lake up at the top is amazing!

Besides the shopping as mentioned in town you can do the scenic loop tour one day in your own vehicle. I believe it is about 80 miles total or so and loops around out of RR west to Questa, then south down 522 to Taos, back east on old Hwy 64 and back up north again on it past Eagle Nest Lake and then back onto 38 and east back over Bobcat Pass and into RR again.
When you get down to Taos there are 2 must sees while there. One is to go see the Taos Pueblo and take the tour. The history of this Native American village will blow your mind. But before you go to the Taos Pueblo and as you are coming down 522 take Hwy 64 west and go see the Rio Grande River Gorge Bridge. It is only about 8 miles out or so from 522 and worth it. It is pretty damn amazing.

Taos itself has some pretty cool things to see inside the town and my wife and I enjoyed the Kit Carson home/museum there.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Brad, is your cabin in town on the river or outside?
We have stayed at a cabin several times now that is about 5 miles out of town south, up 578 and it is also literally right on the river. The back deck is maybe 5' from it. lol
I believe the elevation at the cabin we stay at is 9,300 ft

We are in the upper valley , right on the river . Were headed there July 18- 28
We try and go 3 times a year for a total of 8 weeks combined. I can't wait to retire and get to spend alot more time there. We set at a high elevation

I second everything that has been said and will add a recommendation to check out the slopes in Angel Fire. You can rent mountain bikes and take them up to the top via the ski lift and ride them back down. Take water and food. There are trails for beginners all the way to expert.

Another cool site on your way to Taos is the fish hatchery south of Questa. After that, stop by the John Dunn Bridge and do a little fishing in the Rio Grande. After that, head on down to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Then you can finish the day in Taos. Downtown has several cool shops, and Kit Carsons house is very cool.

up up up

Oh man....I hear ya. If I had a place there already I'd be chompin' at the bit as well to be there all the time.....especially once we break 90 degrees here. lol

So, I suspect you probably had the cinnamon bear in your yard a bunch last summer? We saw him twice last year at our Cabin and another time up on the upper valley road. He got a little close for comfort, at least for my wife one day when we were sitting on the deck. lol

Go down the the Taos Pueblo if its open - very cool.

Trout hatchery up at Questa - can fish up there too.

Fish Eagle Nest Lake, take a boat out on it

Fish Cimarron Canyon

Vietnam Veterans Memorial just south of Eagle Nest (on way to Angel Fire/Taos).

Of course jeep rentals, horseback riding, hiking, etc.

and Raton for some horse racing (assuming it is still going there).

Grew up spending a lot of time in the area and still like going back.

A fellow Texan started this company and it appears to be still going strong. We did a tour with James back in 2010. Kool guy, I would recommend him.

We go often and ATV trails is by far our favorite. We will spend a day or two doing that, another day taking the lifts up and hiking around at the top of the mountain, another day will be spent going to Taos to shop and eat good food as the food and service in RR is awful at most places.

We had pretty good luck at Bull of The Woods & Red River Brewing Co., and Brett's Bistro is a little more expensive but the 4 meals we had there between 2 couples were good.

RR Brewing Co had some very tasty adult beverages as well. lol

Texas Red's is good but Sundance Mexican Food is outstanding. The food at Red River Brewery is very good as well. If you have a beer, try the Copper Chair Amber.

Jeep or UTV up to Goose Lake. Can be a tricky trail at times but it's great at the top.

Il say . Nevermind the three crosses on the way up.

We bring our own food but I have to get a burrito at shotgun Pete's, or Willie's or something like that. The store on town is high dollar for sure. Fyi my wife's make up has exploded twice on the way up. I have tried to answer your pm but something is wrong with the site lately . I hit send and nothing happens
