I caught this snake in my backyard NE of Abilene Thursday morning right before I mowed. When I caught it with my tongs I knew it was way different from other rattlesnakes I’ve messed with. I put it in a tub and went on about my mowing. I finally looked it up and it’s a Western Massasauga. It was released back in my east field later in the day.

Isn’t the venom a different type of toxin than a western diamondback?

Wow, beautiful snake. I’ve always wanted to find a rattlesnake in Texas that wasn’t a western diamondback, just because.

Yes. Actually more toxic than a diamondback but the amount it injects is much less than the diamondback so a bite is usually not as serious as a bite from a diamondback . Massasaugas are the only venomous snake we have in Ontario and they are rare.

OP - great find

You're thinking of the Mojave Rattler, it contains both a neurotoxin and a hemotoxin. The Western Diamondback and the Massasuga carry a hemotoxin.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Not actually a 'different' type of toxin, both are hemotoxins, but the potency can be different.

Very cool snake. Lucky find for the OP...as the Western Massasauga is not a very heat tolerant rattlesnake and spends a lot of time burrowed in the day, this time of year.

Glad to see the OP relocated the reptile instead of killing it.

When i first seen the pic the other day I asked if they'd had any hay delivered from up nth, that's a rare find this far in the southwest.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Massasaugas don't get real big, we've had one collected in MN, but they're pretty common in Wisconsin.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

This is correct. And the toxicity level of the Mojave's neurotoxin venom has been shown to vary wildly from one location to another.

Many folks would be surprised to know we have 10 species of Rattlesnake in Texas. Only Arizona has more with 13 I believe.
